Re: Install of VSC cancel switch

Sounds good bugs1961.

Who's gonna try it first? I'd hate to toast an ECU they are a little costly!!

Re: Install of VSC cancel switch

I'm going to try it as soon as I get the time. Hopefully today.

EDIT: Don't try this! After doing the jumper wire connection and turning on the IGN, the VSC off light didn't come on and now, neither the VSC off or 4wd symbol come on when I put the truck into 4 wheel drive. The truck does go into and out of 4wd though, which was verified in a short test drive on dry pavement. Back to the drawing board.

Thank you bugs test site #1961!

I'll look over the wiring today too...

Re: Install of VSC cancel switch

The plot thickens here just a bit. On page BC-135, at the bottom, the test for pin 27 shows the opposite results as that shown on BC-42. In the detailed testing procedure on BC-135 it shows that there should be no voltage when in 4wd and 12v when in 2wd.

When I test pin 27 on my FJ, I get 12v in both 4wd and 2wd so it would seem that the skid control ECU doesn't get the signal that 4wd is engaged so the VSC OFF and 4wd symbol aren't coming on. When I applied 12v to the grey wire, the 4wd ECU wasn't too happy and it seems to be damaged. If I would have seen p BC-135 first I would have cut the wire to remove the 12v signal to the ECU to indicate 2wd (I can hear all you saying: Moron!) and the skid control ECU might think it's always in 4wd and disable VSC.

Tomorrow I will cut the wire, leaving enough on each end to reconnect, and see if the VSC OFF light comes on in 2wd. I'm already going to buy a new 4wd ECU (Any chance TRD Source can get me a good price?) so I'm not too worried about cutting the wire and reconnecting it isn't difficult.

Take a look at the procedures on p BC-135 and see if anyone has any thoughts or input. I still think this could work and since removing voltage is a whole lot safer than adding it, maybe some brave soul with a good 4wd ECU would be willing to try it. If not, I sure understand. I'll let you know tomorrow what happens when I remove the 12v signal to pin 27.

Re: Install of VSC cancel switch

I have tested cutting the grey wire and found that the VSC OFF, VSC TRAC, and the skid symbol all come on together. I guess that's the same results as the original mod. I haven't ordered a new 4wd ECU yet so I can't tell what would happen if everything else was working properly. I plan to try it again when the new ECU is installed.

Re: Install of VSC cancel switch

Man, thats a shame on buying another ECU. I wanted to do the same thing to try activating the atrac without having the rear locker UPG.
Lemme know how much will cost you the ecu.

Re: Install of VSC cancel switch

I want this mod bad. For dyno, fun, etc.
I'm studying the wiring diagrams now...

Re: Install of VSC cancel switch

I have gotten an email back from a Toyota dealer that gives a good deal over the internet saying the ECU costs $130. Much less than I expected so I will order it this weekend. Try this site: Toyota Parts - Toyota Auto Parts at a discount to order any part you want. Use their email to order for the FJ as they don't have their drop-down menus working for it yet. Unfortunately, I am out of town until the 20th so I won't be able to do any further testing until then. I would really like to find a good solution to the VSC also. Take care.

$130 for the ECU? really? it will need to reprogram or something? even so, will you be able now to get atrac + rear locker at the same time??
