Transmissions / Transfer Cases / Traction AidsThis area is for discussion, questions and problems with the FJ Cruiser's gear train, including topics on A-TRAC, VSC, locking diffs, gear ratios, manual vs. AT, etc.
guys, only problem, that i see anyways, is that when my fj is in 4wd, my trac. control STILL WORKS. no b.s. says vsc off, but if you're on ice, or get one rear loose, or almost off the ground, it kicks the brakes on, just like vsc, but without throttle cut-out. even get the tires w/squigglies light to come on. is annoying as hell. dealer still says normal, no matter what i say, or how many times i take it in. damn^%#$*^%$*&^%&(#%(&#^%dealer can suk my(*&#%(*&%#^#(&^%#(&^%alls. sry, i feel better now.

The 4wd ECU is really nothing more than a complex relay box. Only 10 pins total. The manual has nothing about reprogramming so I don't think it needs anything special.
Here is the info sent to me about the ECU:
89533-35230 4WD COMPUTER 130.97
I think the TRAC problem described by POWERTECHN2: "guys, only problem, that i see anyways, is that when my fj is in 4wd, my trac. control STILL WORKS. no b.s. says vsc off, but if you're on ice, or get one rear loose, or almost off the ground, it kicks the brakes on, just like vsc, but without throttle cut-out." would be solved with this mod because the VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, and the skid indicator all come on when the wire is cut. I don't know if ATRAC will work with the wire cut, though, because my ECU is acting up anyway. I will try it when I can get the new ECU put in. If you put a switch on the wire, then you could just turn the system back on when you are in 4Lo and ATRAC should work normally.
As far as allowing ATRAC And the locker to work together, I'll surely check that out too, but don't expect it to work because the the 4wd ECU is only on auto trans FJs and the purpose is to control the ADD, which the manual FJs don't have. The input to the Skid Control ECU on the manual trans is directly from the center diff lock switch. See page 196 of the electrical manual and this is will be clear. There is a separate ECU, also called a 4wd ECU but for the rear locker. See p 200 of the electrical manual.
ATRAC is a Skid Control ECU function and I think it would require changing that ECU which is much more complex and, I suspect, expensive.

Reason: added info
I have tested the terminals on the 4wd ecu and it has failed. I am pretty drunk right now in Cologne, Germany so I'll get back to you tomorrow. Call me an ass but I have to a party when I can. Take care, Rich

Bugs, go have one for me!! Heck, if I was there I would buy you one!
This is what this forum is about - LEARNING from others. Thanks for sharing, your progress AND your mistakes!
Thanks, and I did have one for you! Can't wait to get home next weekend and see what I can find out.
MoeDaddy: Have you tried the procedure in the manual for disabling TRAC and VSC when on a dyno? I haven't tried that yet, although it sounds worth a try. The only issue I can see is that connecting TS and CG of DLC3 will put the ECM into test mode and I don't know if other systems might be affected. If you or anyone else has done this and driven around for a while with it connected, please let us know how it works. The attached PDF on p 31 shows how to connect the terminals.
This mod works. Just tried it out in the snow (we finally got some here). When you turn it off, the ABS, VSC Off, Squiggles lights come on, turn the switch back on and they go out.
I have tried it briefly and it does work, I have yet to use it off road or put in a switch. I would only consider using this in certain off-road situations where traction control would be a negative.
On a side note I have to believe Toyota had a switch on prototypes that turned it off since in the 2nd edition of the FJ magazine they state that there "is" a switch to disable the traction control. It didn't make it into our version but I wonder if the wiring and apparatus is still there and we have yet to find it.
