Looking for a decent, used pair of TRD rear shocks off of an '07 or '08 FJ. Those were either red or silver (depending on the package). My preference would be red, because they happened to use the stock springs.
Will even consider stock (black) rear shocks if the miles on them are low enough.
Many folks fitted lift kits and aftermarket suspension parts while their vehicles were still relatively new, and might have a pair of these collecting dust. Please let me know if you are one and let's make a deal!
Any rear shocks from any year will work just the same. They were never red though. I think the very first 07TRDs might have been yellow with blue tops (Bilsteins), and then all the newer Trail Teams had silver / blue bilsteins (aside from the TTUE). All the base FJs had black Tokicos or whatever they are called.
Bottom line, dont limit yourself to 07-08 when any will work the same.
actually, the '07~'08 frame hole for the rear shock, top mount was smaller, and the mating shock top stud was smaller diameter, so fitting aftermarket dampers with 14mm dia top stud the stock mounting hardware cannot be used
The aftermarket dampers come with fat rubber grommets to use instead of the stock hardware but there is a difference: the stock mounting makes a kind of a steel inner sleeve which helped to better absorb and limit small body movements (the kind that only the rubber grommets would see, not the full shock travel type of movements). If you fit the A/M ones with the big rubber doughnuts in place, the cab does more of a "milkshake" roll each time the rear suspension moves up/down rather slowly. You won't notice it much on bumpy roads, but it is fairly noticeable on undulating pavement.
After doing some research I learned the TT FJ in those first two years used a unique rear shock with 12mm dia stud and the stock mounting hardware. Bilstein painted them red, instead of the yellow/blue color of the '09~'14MY. Those are the ones I'd like to get a hold of from someone, ideally without too many miles on them.
TRD part number was PTR13-35061. The were called, "TRD Performance Shocks".
They were made by Bilstein, the body was painted red (instead of the usual yellow) and had a blue dust cover.
Hopefully someone out there in FJ land has removed a set of these early in their vehicle's life to install a lift and aftermarket parts and just have a pair of them knocking around in their storage they'd like to move along to someone like me.
yeah, me too, they go in fine, but the big rubber doughnuts at the top don't manage to control some of the low amplitude body side x side movement as well as the OEM fitting did
at least, that is what I wanted to evaluate, but only if I happen to come across a set of these (I'm not going to buy a new pair, since the 4600s I've already fitted are working fine in every other way)
Since there's been no response from my request for a used pair I tried another experiment: I fitted a set of air bags to the rear springs and at 7psi they completely eliminate that milkshake roll. I suspect that the friction from them filling up the spring is enough to accomplish that. The rear is more stiff than it was without them, but only an issue over speed humps, and that should go away when I load it up for trips.
Hi Norm,
Last weekend I changed out my '07 TRD suspension (red with blue dust covers) for 5100 series to level out my FJ.
Unfortunately I had not done it earlier, so they are not in new condition for you, but they are not leaking and I liked their performance before removing them. If you want them they are yours... hope you live close to San Diego.
Matt
