Bumper End Cap Replacement (Diamond Plate)

Still have these if anyone is interested.
Either post up here or PM me.

They are aluminum diamond plate, bolted on with stainless bolts.
The fit is a bit large in the front to cover the slots for the original end caps, but IMHO they look pretty good as long as you don't get overly critical.

The scratches on my bumber are a result of getting the template right, sliding back and forth, etc.

Pricing per pair, mounting bolts/washers/shipping inculded:
$60 unfinished
$100 powder coated

I tried rattle cans with a couple of different products (Rustoleum, Krylon), but wasn't satisfied with the results. So I did a bit of research. Looks like the best prep available is Alodine. You can read about it at these two links (1, 2).

Here's some pictures to see what they look like. Click pictures for bigger images...

Here's some alternatives:
Inexpensive DIY
Lucrum's BWE

Yeah, I broke one of the front ones off on a tree and had to do something.

Not yet on the back, maybe this summer I'll give that a shot.

What I really want to do is get a welder and start building real stuff. Can't afford to buy it.

I haven't done the rear yet. It's a bit more complicated. I was
going to tackle that this Spring. If I can do something that I
think looks ok I'll post it up.

Re: Bumper End Cap Replacement (Diamond Plate)

I don't understand why every design I've seen to do this requires the use of bolts to hold it in place. Can't it just be glued on or 3M taped on? Wouldn't that be a cleaner look?

Sure, you can do that. You don't have to drill holes in it.

But then it's glued on, not bolted.

Depending on the glue, it may not hold, or it may hold too good. What do you do when you want t take it off. I'm thinking about switching my red ones out for bare metal, just to see what they look like.

Re: Bumper End Cap Replacement (Diamond Plate)

Recently, someone posted about these in Lucrum's thread for their Lucrum Bumper Wing Eliminators. Lucrum responded with the following points, which I responded to below. Since I responded in their thread, I thought it only fair to give them a plug here, so here are their points and my response...

Thanks for the additional info and thanks for your business. While I love seeing what people come up with there are some big differences.

1. Lucrum's BWE's are made from high quality molds custom matched to the shape of the Fj's bumper, not sheet metal cut up, there is a cost, quality and big appearance difference we aimed to be the best at.

2. The Lucrum BWE's are fiberglass and have a thick black gel coat that matches the bumper. The gel coat even if scratched severely will not change color and can be sanded or buffed out.

Sheet metal gets rough and shows scratches immediately and paint cant compare to gel coat.

3. The Lucrum BWE's do not show fasteners. The Lucrum BWE's have the same finished great look the FJ came with.

Sheet metal requires screws that can or will rust to show.

4. Lurcum BWE's if installed correctly are guaranteed to never come off. Lucrum's BWE's use high quality 3M chemically bonded and primed emblem adhesives that are formulated for plastics and harsh outdoor weather that will last longer than your vehicle!

Sheet metal screws can back out, strip out soft plastic or just plain come lose after time and off road use.
I've been staying out of this mostly out of respect for you guys. I'd really like to get the Lucrum winch mount when I can afford it.

I couldn't agree more with most of your points, but thought I should correct you on one point and make one comment.

The stainless steel mounting hardware (including lock washers) is stainless steel and shouldn't rust. Mine have not loosened in a year or so with plenty of off-road use. Of course, I do my best not to hit anything, so I can't speak to what would happen if someone does.

The reason I chose bolts, and the exact point is, that they CAN be removed.

If you feel like I have no business posting in your thread, feel free to post in mine. I don't have anything bad to say about your product. I think they are just different from mine, and not my cup of tea.

I wouldn't feel too threatened anyway, haven't sold one yet (while I have given advice to a few who wanted to make their own).
