Toyo MT or NITTO MT

Currently have the ICON Stage I looking to go with the Walker Evans Bead locks. I am up in the air about the next tire. I currently run the nitto AT and have been very pleased with them but I am looking for a little more traction as the trails I have been running tend to be slicker than owl **** when it rains.

I have narrowed it down to either the TOYO MT or the New NITTO MT in the 295/70-17 size.

1. Will I run into problems with the stock control arm or the lift using these and being able to not rub?
2. What are the benefits of each tire?
3. Recommendations?

I am not upgrading anything else on the suspension at this time but will in the future. I am currently in Iraq and plan this upgrade for when I get home. The rest of the upgrade is going to a supercharger since I would like more power. Then I may go up in stages on the suspension. Damn expensive hobby I have! Thanks DOC

Re: Toyo MT or NITTO MT

I have about 30,000 miles and some significant trail time on a set of Toyo MT's, and I have Icon (actually Donahoe) coilovers.

1. With 295's you will be awfully close to rubbing if not rubbing at full turn. I would highly recommend aftermarket UCA's. I'm running ToyTec/Light Racing and am very happy with them. Lift is no problem WRT larger tires.

2. The Toyo MT's have very tough sidewalls; if you wheel on sharp or hard rocks they are great for the strength of the sidewalls. The downside to that is, they have to be aired way down to soften enough for traction. The mileage looks to be great - I bet I've got at least 40% tread, maybe more, at 30,000 miles but I rotate them religiously. They give good traction when aired (way) down, best on rocks and dry dirt. They do well in snow, and decent but not great in mud.

3. Can't compare them with the Nitto's, except to note that they are both made by the same manufacturer. I like the Toyo's and will probably replace these with the same tire when the time comes.

Re: Toyo MT or NITTO MT

Agreed on the rubbing with a 295. Although it is minimal, I rub when in reverse and full turn with Nitto Trail Grapplers. Never moving forward though. I have just dealt with it, but wheel spacers or aftermarked upper control arms is the cure.

Just like 1911 said, Toyo and Nitto muds are virtually the same tire, assuming you are talking about the Nitto Trail Grappers. The Nitto Mud Grapplers are a completely different tread style than the Toyo MTs.

Back to Toyo MTs vs Nitto Trail Grapplers, both are known to be pretty quiet. I can confirm that the Trail Grapplers are quiet, and thus far wear has been great. I also believe the Trail Grapplers have a slightly more agressive sidewall.

Both are awesome tires!

Yes I am speaking of the Trail Grapplers.

Re: Toyo MT or NITTO MT

the rubbing on the upper control arm is also dependant on the wheel you are using and its backspacing (offset).

as far as tire recommendations go, are you looking at the mud grappler or the trail tire from nitto?

the toyo mt is an excellent tire. balances well, quiet, and great tread life for a mt. we sell a lot of them and all the customers are very pleased with them.

i've had the mud grapplers. they are loud and have a different sound to them. they balance well, but the tire life isnt as good as the toyos. probably 30-35k out of them is normal. 40-50k out of the toyos can be expected depending on your driving style.

Long Term Report on Toyo Open Country M/T tires

That write up may give you some good info. I ran 295x70x17 Toyo M/Ts with a SAW 3" lift and stock UCA, stock wheels and did have some rubbing on the UCA. I now run the M/Ts on walker evens with a total chaos 2" long travel kit. Depending on the back space you get for your WE (3.75″ on mine) you should not have rubbing even with stock UCAs.

hope that helps.

Are you running the Walker Evans Beadlocks or Streetlocks? If you are running beadlocks, how do they handle on the road and did you have any issues balancing them? They are sweet rims but for the time being most of my time is still on the street. That will hopefully change within the next year or so. BTW, I'd only be running the W.E.'s for summer tires. For winter, I'll run a different set of wheels & tires.

Re: Toyo MT or NITTO MT

Agreed with lgrt. WE's backspacing will put it pretty far out. You shouldn't have problem with UCA. I think the WEs only come at 3.75 for the 17" wheel.

I'm running the beadlocks... Installing Tires on Walker Evens Bead Locks

For balancing I used internal ceramic beads Balancing tires with ceramic beads These have worked out terrific... my driving is about 80% street daily driving and 20% hard trails. I'm in WA state and see a lot of wet driving as well as snow up to the mountains in the winter and the MTs handle everything well.
