I have BFG AT's on my 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 Sport and they are great on wet roads and heavy rain. Way better than the Goodyear's that came with it. They were also excellent this winter in the snow. That is why I was considering them for my new FJ.

How bad is the mileage with the 285's compared to the stock tires. I am not expecting great mileage but I don't want to be stopping every 5 mintes to fill up either?

Have you seen the pictures from Fusion Cruiser on the other forum (the link is included in a previous response on this thread)? He says that he has no rubs at all with his tires on his stock FJ. I wonder what the difference is. Are his 33' GY Wrangler's smaller than the 285 BFG AT's?

Thanks for your input
I would guess mileage is down 20%-25%. With respect to wet handling, I have a somewhat distorted opinion because the car I replaced was astonishingly good in wet conditions. Most likely the tires will meet your expectations with respect to on-road wet and dry driving.

Did you replace a WRX? My rex wagon was the best rain/snow car <edited for stupid typo> ever.

Mileage is down? how much is the speedometer off? im sure the mileage loss isn't that large.. odometer off by 15% = actual mileage decrease of 5-10%

Uhhh... 15%??? He didn't put 37" tires on you noob! Learn to use your calculator (33 / 31.7 = 1.041; 4.1% increase) and don't make up numbers!

The mileage drop is in small-part due to the increased tire size, more importantly, the weight is almost double the OE tire. It takes more effort to get the wheels rolling, couple that with the higher rolling resistance of the BFG, and ultimately mileage drops 15-20%. Please remember these are just my observations.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Hey Ralph, you need to learn the difference between an example and a statement of fact. If you are going to try to act like you know what you are talking about, at least get your figures right.. rerun your numbers..
the actual difference would have have been even less.
If you are going to attempt to be the "guru" and clown me, shouldn't you have gotten the ACTUAL circumferences of the tires in question? how about tire pressures? ( those do in fact effect the actual circumferences, as does weight of vehicle ) how about frictionial losses?? road conditions? the list goes on and on..
Prior to calling me a "noob" you should have done your homework.
Oh yeah, just FYI... using your crude calculations you should of said 36" tires.. 37's would be closer to 18%

Grab your calculator and try again..

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Hi All,

One thing to consider as well. You just might be able to just clear 285s under the stock suspension setup but remember to leave some room for inexpensive articulation enhancements that are sure to come. The suspension is ok stock but is not very flexy (I think the rti was 481) There will surely be some inexpensive disconnects, better springs/shocks etc that will allow a more reasonable rti of 700-800 for offroading. That will surely start you wishing for a bit of extra space. Just for what it's worth.
