Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?
Hey Ralph, you need to learn the difference between an example and a statement of fact. If you are going to try to act like you know what you are talking about, at least get your figures right.. rerun your numbers..
the actual difference would have have been even less. If you are going to attempt to be the "guru" and clown me, shouldn't you have gotten the ACTUAL circumferences of the tires in question? how about tire pressures? ( those do in fact effect the actual circumferences, as does weight of vehicle ) how about frictionial losses?? road conditions? the list goes on and on.. Prior to calling me a "noob" you should have done your homework. Oh yeah, just FYI... using your crude calculations you should of said 36" tires.. 37's would be closer to 18% Grab your calculator and try again.. |
Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?
Hi All,
One thing to consider as well. You just might be able to just clear 285s under the stock suspension setup but remember to leave some room for inexpensive articulation enhancements that are sure to come. The suspension is ok stock but is not very flexy (I think the rti was 481) There will surely be some inexpensive disconnects, better springs/shocks etc that will allow a more reasonable rti of 700-800 for offroading. That will surely start you wishing for a bit of extra space. Just for what it's worth. |
Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?
By the way I got the BFG ATko in 265s, thought someone might ask.

700 would be pretty frigging awesome with just "inexpesive disconnects" and springs. But somehow I doubt it. |
Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?
I had 285/70/17 BFG AT's installed today without any problems. No scrubbing no rubbing and plenty of clearance. And they look nice and aggressive too!
The ride is smooth and quiet. Good Luck! |

Here are a couple of pics...please excuse me because I posted this eldewhere, of 285 BFG A/T's, 16 inch rims, no lift. They do rub slightly on the rubber behind the tires. They still work fine off road.

pics of my 285.70/17s.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?
I'm also planning to upgrade to 285 BFG's if my FJ ever gets here. I'm wondering if you other guys that upgraded are seeing the same 15-20% loss in MPG that GTA is experiencing?
I realize these weigh 55 lbs vs 40 for stock tires, and I'm familiar with unsprung weight, but that decrease is way more than I expected. TANX; Brian |
