I just ordered 275/70-17 BFG AT's for my FJ from Kal Tire. They should fit without rubbing at all and are a little bigger than the stock size. Why haven't more people looked into these as an option?

Got Muck???????????????????

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Folks, I just purchased my FJ. What is the best recommended lift? And what is the tallest tire that will run on the stock rims?

I'm also planning to upgrade to 285 BFG's if my FJ ever gets here. I'm wondering if you other guys that upgraded are seeing the same 15-20% loss in MPG that GTA is experiencing?

I realize these weigh 55 lbs vs 40 for stock tires, and I'm familiar with unsprung weight, but that decrease is way more than I expected.

Brian
Brian, I have the 285 BFGs and we noticed about a 20% drop in our MPG. On the stock Dunlops we could get close to 300 miles on a tank with highway driving...now we get around 250 after the BFGs were installed. We filled up when the fuel light came on, so there was probably a 4-5 gallon reserve in the tank...giving us a drop from ROUGHLY 20mpg highway with the Dunlops, to 16-17 mpg highway with the BFG. This is after putting over 1100 miles of highway driving in the first week of ownership.

Out of curiosity have you loaded them up with mud, or had full articulation at near wheel lock? With only a half inch of clearance at it's tightest spot I'm pretty curious how this'll workout in severe conditions. I seem to attract those.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Ok... I know this thread is OOOOOLD news... but I need help... based on what Ive read here, 285's without lift will fit with no rubbing if no serious off-roading is involved. There is a 20% drop in MPG for these bigger tires because of (among others) the larger diameter and heavy weight of at least 15 lbs more (each) than the stock tires. I've always liked the looks of bigger tires. Should I sacrifice the looks for better MPG or the other way around? Should I go for the 265/70/17 BFG's or compromise with the Goodyear Wrangler AT Silent Armor 275/70/17's? I know Im the only person who can answer this but if one of you tells me that if I use the BFG 285's it's going to give me good luck, happiness and prosperity, and someday will marry a supermodel, I might believe you and go for it!

Arch, Since upgrading to the 285 BFGs, we have been happy with them. They are MUCH better looking than the Dunlops and the road noise isn't all that different from stock. There is a small amount of rubbing, (more on the driver's side than the passenger) but we don't plan on doing any "serious" off-roading that would cause problems. If it is too much of a problem, I will get a 2" lift or go to the 265 BFGs. As for the gas milage...we just dropped over 30k on a vehicle that gets around 20 mpg on a good day. Fuel economy wasn't on the top of our list for features, but the thing sure looks good sitting on the new BFGs.
