Ok... I know this thread is OOOOOLD news... but I need help... based on what Ive read here, 285's without lift will fit with no rubbing if no serious off-roading is involved. There is a 20% drop in MPG for these bigger tires because of (among others) the larger diameter and heavy weight of at least 15 lbs more (each) than the stock tires. I've always liked the looks of bigger tires. Should I sacrifice the looks for better MPG or the other way around? Should I go for the 265/70/17 BFG's or compromise with the Goodyear Wrangler AT Silent Armor 275/70/17's? I know Im the only person who can answer this but if one of you tells me that if I use the BFG 285's it's going to give me good luck, happiness and prosperity, and someday will marry a supermodel, I might believe you and go for it!

I have had the BFG AT 285's for 3 weeks now and as others have said their great! I have not noticed any decrease in gas mileage...oh, and if you get them you'll definitely win the lottery...

Arch, Since upgrading to the 285 BFGs, we have been happy with them. They are MUCH better looking than the Dunlops and the road noise isn't all that different from stock. There is a small amount of rubbing, (more on the driver's side than the passenger) but we don't plan on doing any "serious" off-roading that would cause problems. I am probably going to get a 2 inch lift to fix that, though. As for the gas milage...we just dropped over 30k on a vehicle that gets around 20 mpg on a good day. Fuel economy wasn't on the top of our list for features, but the thing sure looks good sitting on the new BFGs.
Yeah, I know... someone even said that if MPG is a concern, get a prius... or something to that effect. They're right. And Im about to do that (get a hybrid) but not as of yet and so the FJ will be my daily driving car (truck). But I guess you're right. Didnt even consider it's mileage when I saw this truck for the very first time. Thanks!

Many thanks tnegiet! So if I win the lottery, the possibility of marrying a supermodel is a high probability... plus MPG will never be a concern

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Got mine at Discount tire...I told them to match an internet price of $185 and they said "but you'll have to pay shipping with that" and I said "yeah but I don't have to pay tax over the internet so it's about the same", they grumbled some more and I finally said "so you will or you won't match advertised prices?" They caved, and I got a great deal....always barter at Discount!

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

If you are curious, there are a few pics of the 285 BFGs in my photo gallery. We just got the spare changed over today, as the dealer only ordered 4 tires when we picked up the FJ. FYI, the spare cover wouldn't fit on the larger tire, but I think that it looks better bare.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Installed BFG 285/70/R17 on my 4X2 FJC today. I don't have a lift. The TOYOTA spec says the 4x2 is 1" lower than the 4X4. Clearance just before full turn lock is approx 1/2", (full lock clearance is better). I'll report back on performance and any issues.

Discount tire gave me 50 bucks trade each for factory shoes, 4 of em had 3600 miles on them.

would 33's fit with a 2" body lift? I think it'd be a tight fit but you never know

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

No Body Lift for MY FJC... Have you crawled around under there...

I am so torn between what Lift to get based on cost and function...

Low Cost = Less functional
High Cost - More Functional

SO WHAT DO I DO... Hmmm...
I have to get over my old days of crossing the lakes and running mud slots...

And get to what I like the best, and that is trailing with nature and friends !!!
SO..I will be going crazy unless that lottery winnings come along...

Need DR Front Coil-overs
Need DR rear springs when avail.
Need DR rear shocks for above
Need new upper Control Arm to help with this increased angle
Need to Cut/Trim Back the Front cab body mount
Need five Interco TSL LTB 34-10.5-17 Swampers(they cost about $125 Each )
I think that may do it... But remember I own 2 FJC's (the wife will want to follow along... Maybe some revech 3" spaces for her... Hmmm)

I know, Interco TSL LTB 34-10.5-17 Swampers = LOUD
But I am Used to it... and these are alot quieter then the TSL SX 38-12.5-16.5 I used to run...
