Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

285/70/17 Wrangler silent armor, fit nicely under the stock FJ. Just unsrew the 4 screws and remove the plastic body clip in the front mudflaps. It's a 5 min. job. No rub no problem in any street use. If you are gonna do any serious wheeling with 285's I recommend at least the OME lift. I have these tires on the stocker and they work well, now waiting for the parts for the OME..

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

I just ordered the Mickey Thompson MTZ's in a 285x75Rx16. Got the Revtec lift. Best I can tell, the Mickey T's are exactly what they have on the Revtec FJ. Just curious, as I've never owned Mickey Thompson's before, any feedback on their quality/noise/ride etc. Thanks.

Here is what I think you meant:

*I* found 5 10mm screws/bolts and a plastic fastener... I'm not sure what you meant by "the plastic body clip in the front mudflaps". As you can see I removed the entire mud flap in preparation for having my Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor's (285/70R17) mounted tomorrow. I plan to drive it home and then experiement with clearances. I didn't want to risk a potential rub on the plastics coming home from the shop. It seems to me that in street use the only potential for rub is when turning the front wheels, them making contact with the plastic covering the frame where the body mounts. It would help if you or someone could elaborate because I would like to have the splash guard on if possible.

By my guess this is buying me *maybe* a 1/4 inch of clearance, if that - the distance the plastic cover moulding sticks out a bit from the frame and body mount because it is not a "glove" tight fit against the frame.

The P285 silent armor will not rub in street use. You figured out the mudflap thing perfectly. If you lift 3" you can put the flap back on.

So has anyone actually flexed out their FJ with 285's and no lift?

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Well, got the GYSA 285's put on yesterday. Took some pics of fitment in my "areas of concern":

I was attempting to use something that I thought people would recognize and stay in place while I took the pic, the Sharpie. It represents a space that is about 3/8th's of an inch. No problem with the clearances on the rear door spare mount either.

I've haven't had a chance to take a picture of it yet, but I did throw the splash guards back on last night when I got home. The rubbery plastic that covers that area is about 1/16th of an inch thick. Add to that a little 1/16th of an inch air spacing between the cover and the frame/body mount area and you lose a total of about 1/8th of an inch in clearance, leaving me between 3/8th's and 1/4 inch of clearance from the tire tread to the plastic splash guard cover.

I decided if they *do* rub in that location for some reason, I would rather rub the splash guard cover than have road debris coming up from the road etching it's way into the plastics and paint behind the wheel. I can't imagine where else this tire might rub in street use.

As far as ride... the FJ seem more "trucky" getting away from the "C" load rating stock Dueler's and moving to a "D" load rating with a higher PSI. It also seems more solid in its footing. I can hear a bit more tire noise over the stock Dueler's too, but moving to an AT tire, that was my expectation.

The FJ definitely looks better, more rugged and complete. These tires are essentially 1 inch taller and 1 inch wider than the stock size. I will post more pics when daylight returns and I can snap a few more.

If you are thinking about these, I say go for it.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

One other thing I meant to add... I *still* don't see where a body lift will prevent rubbing in the location I mentioned because rasing the body off the frame further does not change the relationship between the wheel and the frame. A body lift *would* move the top of the wheel well up providing more clearance from the top of the tire when the suspension is compressed.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Thanks for the info and pics. I would be interested to see if they rub when doing a locked turn on any kind of street incline (such as a turning onto a steep driveway). I know from experience those seemed to be the problem areas when it comes to tight clearances.

If you could hit a few bumps while going in circles with the tired locked at different angles I'm sure that would clear up any concerns. I want to put on some AT tread now & use for the next few years w/o any kind of lift & I would much rather have 285's, but not going to do it if they rub on the street since that will only be disaster when I take it off road.

Please keep us posted. Thanks.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Have you considered the GYSA 275's?

I have the perfect driveway in mind to try this and will post back if any rubbing.

Yeah, I thought about them, but I really would prefer the little more meat of the 285's and I'm a big fan of BFGs and Revos (still have not decided which one I'm going to go with, but either way, neither offer a 275).
