Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Thanks. I guess it depends on the true out diameter of the 33's. The BFG's are 32.8" and squeezed by the 7.5" rim... probably a little taller. Can't say for sure if your tire choice will fit front or back. I need to get the truck twisting a bit before I can intelligently comment.

Hey, Congrats on the FJ! I wanted to find out from you if you noticed that there is still space on the rear for 33's. I know you installed the 285's so I am going to need an extra half an inch or so. I am crossing my fingers that this can be done...otherwise, Ill have to do something about those bumpers. So, do you think that the 33's will fit? Thanks again!
Sorry broom, I misunderstood your question. Will it fit the rear door?? Think so... I just measure it and you have another 1/2 inch before it rubs on the rear step.

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

Some pics. Forgive the quality, it is really overcast here today.... also, garage area isn't much to look at.

pic 1 - profile
pic 2 - rear tire
pic 3 - rear tire with tape vertical (5 inches clearance)
pic 4 - rear tire with tape horizontal
pic 4 - front tire with tape vertical (3 1/2 inches clearance)
*pic 5 - front tire with tape horizontal (3 1/2 inches clearance) next post
*pic 6 - front tire full lock (1/4 inch clearance) next post
*pic 7 - rear door (1/2 inch clearance from step) next post

Having had a close look at the front it may prove problematic on a trail although the only place that seems worrisome is horizontal movement against the backside of the front fender well... there is a flange sticking out 3 inches. I think this is a caster issue... if the tire moves towards the rear of the car when loaded at full lock there may be a rub (only 1/4 inch clearance). I really do not understand the suspension travel of the truck yet so I need to experiment.

The height may also be tight since the outside of the tire lines up with the outer curled lip of the plastic fender. Full compression may bump... but I have about 3 inches to play with. Also... if there is any articulation affecting the camber the tire may just tuck up under the well.

Rear seems fine... but won't know until I try a few things.

If I could find slightly taller springs I would opt for them. Fortuneatley my tire shop will take the tires back if they prove problematic and fit the 265's.

Paul

By the way.... is there any way to post bigger pics.. the size does not do them justice. Thanks - Paul

Does the rear window work ok with the new tire ? I have a good fix Idea for the rubbing........................Donahue coilover shocks.............Looks nice ! Like the size differance ,A little bigger but not enough to mess with the gearing...Hows the ride with the AT's compared to the stock tires ?
