Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

I spoke to revtek and they said you couldn't run a 285 on a factory rim as it would hit. Has anyone tried?I will try when I get my lift.

thanks
James

The plastic does deform easily... it is the steel frame behind it that won't The body mount support behind the plastic has about 2 inches that can be trimmed if need be... only after a trail test of course
I see now what you are talking about on the front tires... rear portion of the wheel well... you'd have to trim it back with a grinder and repaint it, hoping it doesn't cause serious damage. You really have to lift the heck out of the FJ to get it to clear that area too! Ridiculous design to place that support so close, in my opinion.

Exactly and there seems to be lots of room for grinding After a little more testing I found it inetersting that at full lock with some compression, the outside edge of the tire that could contact the frame actually articulates a little more and misses it. The problem is now not a full lock problem but a 3/4 turning issue.

No this size will not fit, they rub on the rear bottom wheel well. The lift is suppose to be the same ast the 4Runner lift.

You do have them mounted and are driving right? I mean, without compressing the front suspension, you are just barely clearing the 3/4 area, right? I see your pics of them clearing that region with only like a 1/4" to spare. Why is everyone saying they can't fit, when I see yours fitting???

Re: will 285/70-17 tires fit?

just went to mayfeild toyota in edmonton to see if my fj was in and they had a lifted (3" revtech) there in black with 33/12.5/17 **** creepy muds on it and there was lots of room. looked like 35"s would fit as long as you never left a paved road

The tires are on and fine for city, highway and moderate off road. I have put the truck through some twists, bumps and hills without rubbing. I have decided to wait and truly trail test the truck before I get a lift. I plan to paint the vulnerable area's with white shoe polish and will quickly find out where it rubs

Actually, looking closely at the situation, I do not think (if your 285/70s are not currently rubbing at 3/4 turn) they will rub under compression in the worry area around the 3/4 turn. The horizontal quadrant of the tire is even with the area in question at normal ride height. When the suspension compresses, it seems to get more clearance above that spot.

Is yours closer at the shoulder of the tire now that you are using the BFGs? They seem to have a squarer shoulder that might make the clearance issue worse at 3/4.

At the shoulder the tire narrows approximately 1 inch either side when compared to the widest part. This may be why the BFG's have a little extra space when compared to other 285's or 33's.
