I have been looking/planning this for a while, so after blowing up a tire in trail this weekend ( got to buy a new one why not go 35's ') )i am going to do the switch. So far i think i have it figured out, just want more info or pointers.
Here'e the "route" i am taking
What i have OME 3" ( 885s front -back ), Body Mount chop
Needs to be done - Body Lift 1", Get BF KM2 315/70/17, regearing to 4.56
Will this be all ? Need go higher ? I don't want to go the 6" lift way, spacers ? Preloaders ?
I'm considering the Duratrac 315/70/17 myself they only weigh 5 more pounds than my 275/70/18 Duratracs and i just love the Duratracs would need new rims also.looking at rims with a 4.5 backspace. I already have a BMC and Bushwacker flares with a Toytec Ultimate 3" lift and Total Chaos UCAs and Spidertrax 1.25 Hub Centric spacers , I'm just not sure if they would rub or not any opinions guys
We are almost in the exact same boat... Only difference is I don't have Bushwackers. Just worried about the 35" and rubbing. Been bouncing back and forth for over a year on this subject... getting really close to needing new tires. Hopefully get some replies with actual results.
Honestly if you chop the body mount enough and hammer/grind down the pinch weld running vertically up from the body mount, you will not rub. I have spidertrax too and with 315 Mickey Thompsons stuffed it's been fine.
I have toytec 3", stock uca, 1.25 spacer, 4.5 bs wheel, stock flares, bmc, and 35x12.5x17 km2. I occasionally rub the frame rail behind the front tires under full lock, full compression (ie bottoming out), only happens when the tire is aired down and squished out, very slight. In the rear I have metal tech 2" long travel springs and 3" bumpstop drops. If my tires aren't aired down, I rub both sides at full compression. Aired down to around 15psi and I only rub on the drivers side, due to the 3/4" lean I have, it's minimal.
I have a similar lean... Thanks I have a similar setup less the bmc, no spacer w/-12 bs rim and just ordered those same tires. 2nd set of KM2's, the first set has gotten 73.5k worth of miles on a strict 5 tire, 5000 mile rotation. Prolly could go another 10k before needing to replace but..... winter is here and I cant be driving around on less than good tires... That's my story and I'm sticking to it.... lol
Ive been driving around now for the past few days on my 35's, stock gears, it hasn't been too bad, just keep it in 4th and forget about using 5th and overdrive. At 70mph (correct speed using GPS) or 65mph by the speedo I'm at about 2500 rpm and have been averaging 14mpg
Overall, I'm happy with the 35s. Imo, if you offroad alot, especially in the rocks, they're worth the extra ground clearance if you don't have the 6" lift, and the extra rubber on the sidewall of 35 on 17" rim compared to a 33 on 17" rim is worth it.
I re-geared to 4.56 after putting 35s on. I ran stock gears for a few months to see how the FJ did. Imo, it's not needed, but definitely worth it. I now have the power back where it should be, cruise control and overdrive work again. As far as mileage, I get 14city/16hwy. Also helps out for slow speed rock crawling.
So I got my 35's yesterday, only got to roll on 'em home from discount tire, so needless to say, until I get the BMC next week I only get to go straight and definitely no flexing... LOL I felt like a 6 y/o at Christmas....
One more question, How in the H-e-double hockey sticks do I fit this big a$$ spare on the back now? Stock carrier and bumper. I found a thread on here about redrilling the tire carrier anchor points.
Did that work for you?
I flipped the tire carrier upside down, removed the studs and replaced with longer studs and added a 1" spacer. There's a thread that has several ways that work. Although with most setups, you won't be able to open the rear window fully, I can't, but I don't mind
Thanks man. It works for now.... LOL at least until I can afford one of those pricey fancy rear bumper with tire rack... According to mama, with the lift, rims and tires this year, I've reached my allowable spending limit for the next ten years...
