Re: Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Tires

I've had my Cooper ST/Maxx in standard size on stock rims since new (now about 13,000km) and think they are great in all the off road conditions I have encountered, although in thick mud they can clog a bit, but self clean easily once your out of the mire. I have had them down to around 12psi on sand (the sidewalls require more air out of them than others were using on the day to get them to 'bag' nicely).

The only issue I have found is that I think they are a bit slippery on wet bitumen, more than I had thought but if you drive to the conditions then they are fine.

Overall I have been happy with the purchase.

Re: Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Tires

I don't have the ST but I run the STT and they are a great tire. Almost done with them so now I've been trying to figure out what I'm going with next.

Awesome setup!! I'm in the market for new wheels and tires. How are you liking this setup ? What bolt pattern are the wheels?

Re: Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Tires

Seems Cooper (Goodyear) has been able to build two great tires - The Cooper Disco ST MAXX and Duratracs that both excel as dual purpose off road tire but also have decent on road manners. Excellent looking tire and reviews look good. Only other brand thats even close is the Falkin Wild Peaks and those aren't nearly as aggressive looking which to me is a selling point worth a look at the Cooper / Goodyear styles.

Kelly (Goodyear) has a very similar tire, the Safari TSR. Not identical but a lot in common with the ST Maxx.

I've run the old STs in the past and they were great, my current Safari TSRs are excellent as well. I'm curious to hear tread life averages on the the ST, as the TSRs are wearing phenomenally well.

Re: Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Tires

I still haven't had these off road. However, they do run smooth and quiet on the highway and they track well. They do feel a little square(flat spotted) after being parked outside for a few days in cold weather.

They are heavier than my previous combo and I am confident that I've lost another mpg even though I am running them at 40 psi which is a bit rough. Of course, they are more of a mud terrain tire than an all terrain and the large tread voids contribute to the loss in mileage.

Re: Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Tires

NEED INPUT: I am VERY close to buying these S/T Maxx tires for my Stock wheels. I do NOT go off road, just going for the looks without getting a True Mud tire.

I am only driving Highway and City, ---> HOW IS THE ROAD NOISE AND DRIVING FEEL OF THESE COOPER S/T maxx Tires??? I am coming from the factory Dueler HWY Tire and NEED a more aggressive look but do not want to hamper the ride too much, Wifes car and she likes her CURRENT boring Tires. ANY HELP from you guys will assist.

Thanks (See Photo - Her FJ needs some SWEET TIRES)

Others should definitely weigh in on this but the ST MAXX will be considerably heavier than the OE tires in your picture, and will adversely affect your MPG. Conventional wisdom says that 10lbs of unsprung weight has the same effect on mileage, braking, and handling as 100lbs of onboard weight. And as we all know, carrying extra weight in your truck will sap some mileage on the daily drive. Since you just stated that you do NOT go off road I personally would recommend one of the standard load P-Metric 'Hybrid' tires that have the rugged look you're after but aren't much heavier than the OE tires, will ride and handle better, have 50k mileage warranties, and are probably less $$ than an E-Load tire like the ST MAXX.

My short list for you would include (in alpha-order) the BFGoodrich Rugged Terrain, the Cooper Discoverer AT3, and the Falken Wildpeak AT (aka the Rocky Mountain ATS at Discount Tire).
Pictures of those three tires in this thread - Hybrid Tires?

FYI, here's a comparison of the weights (per tire) for some different P-Metric and Light Truck (LT) tires in the 265/70-17 stock size as a reference.

39lbs - Stock Bridgestone Dueler HT D684 II (P-Metric, Standard Load)
39.4lbs - BFG Rugged Terrain (P-Metric, Standard Load)
41lbs - Cooper Discoverer AT3 (P-Metric, Standard Load)
43lbs - Falken Wildpeak AT (P-Metric, Standard Load)
44lbs - Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac (LT, C-Load)
45.8lbs - BFG All Terrain KO (LT, C-Load)
50lbs - Cooper Discoverer AT3 (LT, C-Load)
54lbs - Falken Wildpeak AT (LT, E-Load)
55lbs - Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX (LT, E-Load)

Re: Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Tires

Don't want to hijack the thread, but you mention Cooper (Goodyear) almost seems like you mentioned them that way as one owns the other?
