Steelies or Alloy?

I love the look of both the stock steelies and the Rock Krawler steelies that some on this forum have put on. Yesterday I went to 4Wheel Parts to discuss some mods on the FJ I'm buying and the guy told me two things:

1) Don't get steelies because "you can't ballance them"; and
2) With the OME 3" lift kit, the maximum size wheel was 17 x 8 not 9.

Are either claims true? As a practical matter, most of my driving will be on-road, so a decent ride without pulling is important to me. But I can't believe Toyota would include steel wheel as stock if they couldn't be well balanced.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

It's amazing the crap people will make up to try to sell you something
that they want to sell you and which you don't want, because it costs
more and its in their interest to do so.

Either that or because they're just incompetant and don't know how
to balance a wheel properly.

Re: Steelies or Alloy?

I have the Rock Krawler steel wheels and they are slightly out of balance with the Super swamper SSR radials, but not much ( I haven't had them in to tryu and totally balance them). I still drive everywhere, freeway, surface streets, offroad, etc. I think if my rig were just going to be a street rig I would have gotten some alloy wheels. I keep my stock tires and wheels around so if I'm not going to wheel for a while I can throw them back on.

Re: Steelies or Alloy?

Toyota spends gobs of time and money designing and manufacturing wheels. (they make wheels for other makes as well) I would not expect poor performance out of the factory steel wheels. Aftermarket steelies may be a different story, but I've not heard of any major issues.

Re: Steelies or Alloy?

My OEM steelies appear to be balanced perfectly, it doesn't pull to one side or the other and there is no wobble. Just my two peso's.

Re: Steelies or Alloy?

OEM steelies are exactly that "Original Equipment", anyone who says they can't be balanced is full of shlt! That and they don't know what they are doing or just don't want to to it. Why would a manufacturer purposely produce and sell smoething that doesn't work? Specially a company like Toyota, believe me they're tested and proven.

I have some OEM stock steelies on my FJ that I picked up at an accessories shop they came off a brand new FJ, and ride just as well as the alloys did. There are several reasons why some tires/wheels combinations are hard to balance................usually it's one of three things 1.bad equipment/operator; 2. A tire that is wayyyyyyy out of round, or a damaged wheel. In this day and age if you have a new tire and a new wheel that won't balance properly it's usually number 1. (And I'm sure they'll recommend a more expensive tire & wheel that will miraculously work perfectly. My advice is to switch tire shops. Another 2 cents.

Re: Steelies or Alloy?

Thanks for the replies. I kind of figured that the OEM would have to work. Let me ask this. For those of you who have put on after-market steelies (like the nice looking Rock Krawlers) have you and any problems with ballance (especially with a reputable brand of AT's like BFG)? Thanks.
