Re: Firestone Destination 285/70/17. No lift. No chop. Yet.

Dragon, I don't think it will be necessary to cut the body mounts if you lift your FJ I've got Goodyear MTR's 285/70/17's with a 3" lift and at full articulation i'm not getting any noticeable rubbing. Like you said you've got the sawzall on stand by, i wouldn't cut anything till you've ran the lift for awhile.

By the way you think your gas mileage has dropped with the new boots just wait till you get your lift, i'll bet you lose another 1 or 2 mpg's. When i got my tires and lift my mileage went from 17mpg to 12mpg. But i've gotta say i wouldn't trade the lift and tires for better mileage i love my gas guzzler.

Thanks for the info. That is what I am suspecting as well. ...and I'm with you, I love my guzzler. As someone said previously, the FJ is gauged in smiles per gallon.

Does the FJ have an on-board computer to calculate mpg?? If so, then did you use it for the numbers?? With your new rubber, you are moving farther with every revolution of the tire. Therefore, you should do manual calculations instead of relying on computer

Good point, Thai. The speedometer is about 3.5% slower (as the circumference is about 3.5% larger) than with the stock tires. If I can use that number, I can add about another 1/2 mpg. Still around 16 mpg.

Did you paint your stock rims yourself? No disrespect intended...just looks that way to me...

None taken. I think the above photos have "tire shop" wear and tear on both the wheels and tires. I thought they look ok, certainly better than the shiney aluminum (IMO). It is temporary, too. My list is long for mods, but my tenacity in seeing it through is real. For now, I am content with the home paint job.

tires look great.

as far as the wheels..i think they look great too, and I've considered painting them myself...what kind of paint did you use?

oh and thanks again for the photoshop of the red sliders...I'll be sure to send you a pic if I end up painting them red.

.
thanks

I brushed on an aluminum primer made by Rustoleum. It is necessary to prep the aluminum this way or the paint will flake off.

Then I brushed on Rustoleum Flat black ( a few coats)

This has held up extremely well. Though some don't like the look, I am very impressed with how it has not scratched at all except for when the tire guys removed the tires. That touched up pretty easy, though.

The whole benefit of painting is easy touch up.
