Re: Firestone Destination 285/70/17. No lift. No chop. Yet.
Ok, 5 months later... are you still happy and proud of your shoes?
I am about to plink down some cash for new tires, and this is the one I am most likely to acquire, pending convincing otherwise.
Did you get that lift? How much?
I'd prefer to do anything to *not* lift the truck, or at least lift it the minimum amount possible.
My off-roading will consist of light to moderate trails, streams, and probably some mud (not much, mostly if I occasion upon it, but I won't go searching it out). It will also consist of hitting the Dunes near Pismo beach on occasion.
Good tire choice still? What size lift would you recommend?
Thanks!

I love the tires still. In every weather and terrain they have been great. I did the OME lift (about 2-1/2") but it is not necessary with these tires. But if you get the 285/70/17's you will want to chop the body mount down or you will have rubbing, regardless of lift.
Re: Firestone Destination 285/70/17. No lift. No chop. Yet.
At first the noise was barely audible. Around 10,000 and they started to be a bit louder. At 13,000 + now and they are again not too noticeable. The comfort is great!

These are the MT's. Damn it's close. It's close to the body mount. It's close to the wheel well. It's close to the control arms. ...but it's not touching anywhere. The bottom line for me is it is too close for comfort. I will be doing the body mount chop and getting the lift. Sorry for the dark pics, but it's night time. I'll put some more up tomorrow.
Dragon,
I got my Destination MT's on yesterday (will post pictures tomorrow) and I do have what I estimate to be a 3mm's worth of rub on the body mount. I removed the mudflap, there doesn't seem to be any tire-touching anywhere else and I took it over some good ruts this evening. How is it yours of the same size aren't touching the body mounts? And at the risk of being flamed, why is a slight rub on the body mount a bad thing, other than uneven wear on the outer tread blocks? I did a search and must have read 50 post on this topic.
and btw, thanks for the recommendation. I have to say my Geolander MT's slip less, but after driving in heavy rain today, stickier tires on water is a good trade off.

Mine did rub. That first night I was eyeballing. I noticed rubbing at full turn in the following weeks. I ended up chopping the boddy mounts.
For me, I just don't want to be in a position on or off a trail when I need to turn fully and cannot because my tire is hitting the mount. That is why I trimmed them.

Thanks for the input- I couldn't find the answer simplified. I wondered about that tonight when we went to the local mud rut field, specifically how much turn I have lost. How did you chop your mounts? What tool did you use? Where did you cut? Thanks for helping out the newbie.
