ProComp Wheels and Others

is it just me or do ProComp wheels look strikingly similar to American Racing styles...or is it the other way around. To me it seems like ProComp is the one copying styles because they have a style very similar to Mickey Thompson wheels also. Might be a trend of theirs. That'd bother me if that was the case. It would seem to decrease the legitimacy of their wheel line. Anyway, shopping for wheels it's just something I've noticed.

I don't know what you're talking about. I don't see it.

I'm not sure about Procomp, but American Racing has been copying wheels for years. In fact, they still sell the "Outlaw I" and "Outlaw II" which are nothing more than copies of the old Centerlines. Don't they have a wheel similar to the Moto Metal 951 now?

Maybe cuz American Racing is the parent company of ProComp...not 100 % sure of that ..but I think so.

Interesting. I mean, copying happens, it happens in a lot of industries. I just noticed it with wheels and with some styles looking exactly like another, what's the incentive to buy one over the other besides price? I just thought there might be more to it. Personally I'd be upset if a thoughtful design that I spent hours and hours creating was simply copied and offered at a lower price point.

Yes, it's called the Crush:

American Racing-- Wheels Catalog

I've seen it in person & looks pretty good.

Re: ProComp Wheels and Others

wheel copying has been around for ages. Usually starts out with a high-end company releasing a nice 3-piece forged wheel, then it trickles down to 1 piece cast knockoffs. Doesn't seem to be as prevalent in the offroading scene as in other tuning scenes as I have noticed so far. On the other hand, you can only have so many classic wheel designs..if something looks good, it looks good, so a lot of companies go with what works. That's why so many companies have their version of the mesh wheel, their version of the classic five spoke, etc.
