Question Has there ever been a Group Buy on Tires?

I haven't been here long, but I've never seen a group buy on tires. Does it not make sense with shipping and mounting/balancing? I've ordered from tirerack before paid shipping and had mounted locally.

yep, I would like to see it but getting more than two people to decide on the same tires... That would be a miracle...

My $0.02 would be for Mickey's too.

Yep, that would be like herding cats. Hard enough to herd oneself to choose between two tire choices.

I have spoken with a forum member whose shop was thinking about being forum vendors specifically to give the tire thing a good group buy try. But I think he is using the other GBs as a gauge of exactly how successful GBs are on this site...as well as how friendly things remain as a result of the challenges that GBs can be, especially with large numbers. This guy was talking about offering a GB on a specific tire that many members either have...and of course there are many a thread and posts on this one.

Oh yeah, another difficult part of a tire GB would be to get folks to also decide on the same size...oh yeah and quantity too. Some like all 5 tires, others just want 4 on the floor.

Good luck to any vendor wanting to take this one on

Re: Has there ever been a Group Buy on Tires?

I'm not sure how discounts work for vendors. If they get a discount if they buy more of a specific tire or not. But if a vendor sells MT or BFG, if they have the opportunity to mail order 5 tires for 10 or 20 members, then maybe making a smaller margin than usual would be a good deal. That's 50 or 100 tires. I would think they would all have to be the same size, but who knows.

It just seems that tires are hugely expensive, as much as a bumper almost. Tire Rack seems to have the mail order thing down. I can't see why it wouldn't work for some other vendor. Depends on margins though. I'm not doing a group buy to save $10 a tire or even $20 a tire.

I would think there would be a pretty high demand for BFG AT KOs in 265 or 285. Most people like myself want to swap out the stock Bridgestones.
