i've decided to get some procomp 7089 wheels but need some help from fellow forum members...
went to 4wheelparts and was told that the 17x9 are not in stock...the guy did say that he had some 17x8 in the back...he then said that the 17x8 would be a better size than the 17x9 for the cruiser...i told him i'd be back on monday after i did some research regarding fitment.
i've read most of the threads regarding 17x8 and 17x9 procomp 7089 fitment issues...seems like the 17x9 will fit all the time but the 17x8 will only fit sometimes...some had to grind off a bit of the front calipers to get them to fit...
i'd like to avoid grinding the brake calipers...i'd also like to avoid chopping the body mounts (concerned about warranty issues)...based on these two criteria would the 17x8 wheel or 17x9 wheel be a better choice?..
i'm planning on going with nitto terra grapplers in a size 285/70/17 for tires (i believe this tire is about 32.7")...i'm hoping someone doesn't say i'm gonna have to chop the mounts regardless of wheel size because of my tire choice.
If they have the 17x8 in the store have them do a test fit, 4WP is notoriuos for screwing up wheel/tire orders, that would be the easiset way to see if they hit the calipers, and you could see if the tires hit the body mounts. And most importantly you could verify the order is correct.
I went with the 17x9 7089's with 305/65/R17 which are 32.6" dia and a little over 12" wide. The 295's are a little narrower at 11.6" so you may be able to get away from the body mount chop. My tires came within 1/4" of the body mounts at full articulation, narrower tires would get you more clearance, as width was more of an issue than height in that instance.
assuming the 17x8 fit should i get them?..or should i wait for the 17x9?..
from what i understand about wheeling, a narrower wheel is ideal...is this correct?..
i've been into tuner cars ever since before i could drive...i know that in that world a wider wheel (up to a certain point) offers better stability and handling...
does this hold true for wheeling and driving off-road?..i think the wider wheel will be better on-road but perhaps it will be less suitable off-road...
I think that you need to decide what tire size you are going to run, but you make a final decision on the wheel size.
For example a stock size (265/70R17) Mickey Thompson MTZ can run on rims from 7-9". While the same tire in 33x12.5x17 would run on wheels from 8.5-11". So try to figure out what tires you want now, what you might want in the future, then revisit this question.
I was going to buy the 17x9 7089, but ran into the same issue of being out of stock... I beleive they said until mid or the end of July. so I went with the 17x9 1069 polished, this way if I gouge them I can buff them out. I like them alot... My FJ is Black so it would have been to much Black my wife says...

I have the 17x8 with Toyo Open Country M/T 295/70/17...Great looking combo. 4WP did take about two months to complete my order (received one, than three, than my last one) after ordering from Truckfest, but now that I do have them I am happy.
