Re: Airless Tires!

Those have been in development for a while. They're going to try them on heavy equip first. Main problem for road cars seems to be the aesthetics. No one would want an 'ugly' tire like that. I think they'd look sweet on the FJ! Plus, no flats, no need to air up or down, almost no risk of popping a tire off. They sound great for off road...of course, mud would pack in there pretty good!

Re: Airless Tires!

i doubt they make much noise at all. i saw a thing on them in popular mechanics or popular science a while back. i am pretty sure that the picture above is just for a demonstation. i highly doubt it would look like that.

I saw the same episode, but I was thinking about the effects of water. Seems like that would make the cars handling really interesting on a wet road.

Re: Airless Tires!

Can't be much worse than the "run flat" tires on my wife's Lexus - I hate those things, they're very hard riding.

Who's gonna be the first to stuff 35" Airless tires on their rig?

Re: Airless Tires!

I wonder how much noise comes from the sound bouncing around in the chamber of an 'air' tire? Maybe these would be more quiet? I'm assuming that if they made these tires, they would have a sidewall of some sort. It would suck to be off-roading and have a large stick slide in there...then WHAM-O! Right into the fender.

Apparently, these are supposed to ride as good as 'normal' tires and actually be better for large and/or sharp impacts. I'd love to try a set!

Re: Airless Tires!

I agree with Clerk, I think unless enclosed those suckers might get a little out of balance in the mud.
