Biggest tire without a lift?

What is the biggest tire RECOMMENDED without doing any other like a lift, and without worrying about damage (i.e. premature part failure)?

Black steel wheels, 16" is what people are using? Source?

Thanks.

Re: Biggest tire without a lift?

I run 275/70/17's on the factory alloy wheels. No rubbing, no body mount chopping, no lift, no sweat. Slightly bigger than stock...honestly, the most notable difference is in the look. It just looks right.

I hear that you can put up to 285/70/17 on stock rims and not rubbing issues.

Re: Biggest tire without a lift?

Hi!!
I have been doing a lot of reading/asking about the same thing.
So far those sizes work without lift:

Stock 265/70/17 (31.61)

255/75/17 (32.06in) --> DIF: 0.45
275/70/17 (32.16in) --> DIF: 0.55
285/70/17 (32.71in) --> DIF: 1.10
285/75/17 (33.83in) --> DIF: 2.22

I am going to get 275/70/17 for my FJ this weekend

Re: Biggest tire without a lift?

does it matter what type/brand of tire you use as well? i've heard talk about M/T tires rubbing when A/T tires don't---or Firestones rub and BFG's don't etc.....

any truth to any of that?

This question has been batted around for over a year and still no clear answer.

Re: Biggest tire without a lift?

I have a level kit on the front and 295 70 17 Terra Grapplers. No rubbing at all on the streets. It rubs ever so slightly at full turns when off roading.

Re: Biggest tire without a lift?

FJinDFW, how are those grapplers on the road? I wouldn't get 295's, but I have had my eye on the 285's.
