Re: Kumho Tires

I tried the Kumho Road Venture AT's 285/70/17. After my third trip back to America's tire to try to get them to balance, I threw in the towel. They ordered 2 new tires to try to replace the 2 worst ones, but the 2 they got in were worse (out of round) than the ones they were to replace. Bottom line, good luck getting Kumho's to balance, especially for an FJ. I ended up getting Nitto's 295/70/17 and they balanced right up, the steering shimmy is gone. The Nitto's were $65 more each, but they have deeper tread, they balance and they just plain look better and I bet perform better. Don't waste your time on these tires for an FJ.

Re: Kumho Tires

I've had Kumho's on my NSX and Viper....they are excellent tires. Ofcourse we're talking road coarse and not off-road. They handled the Viper's torque very well, gripped the road like glue, lasted quite a while and were an awesome value/buy. I'd definetly put them on again.

When I get an FJ, I will seriously consider these tires as well.

Re: Kumho Tires

BFG's are made in the same plants to the same standard as many other tire brands. Durango and Cooper a/t's and m/t's, for example, are BFG's but substantially cheaper. Dunlop is a cheaper tire that is not related to BFG, but preforms as good if not better in most instance(I have had 3 sets of dunlops-a/t, and m/t, and 2 sets of BFG a/t's) no significant difference, except for the bfg's are worse in the rain.

Re: Kumho Tires

We've run Kumhos on our rally (gravel) car and have found them to perform admirably. No problems balancing them either, though balancing a 185/65/13 is a far cry from balancing a 285/70/17!

Re: Kumho Tires

I am not sure about off roading but within the Dodge Viper Community they are used a lot as they are nice and sticky. How long they last is not an issue. Appying 1000+ HP from a modified V10 is.

Maybe they just suck at producing off road tires.

Re: Kumho Tires

7 tires and only one was round enough to get balanced properly for me. Maybe it's just the 17" tires that are out of round, I don't know? The extra tread depth of the Nitto's over the Kumho's make the Nitto's a better value IMO. After my experience with Kumho's, I'll be amazed if somebody can actually get 4 17" tires to balance on an FJ. I was getting a full 1 inch of steering wheel shimmy from 45 mph to 60 mph. I'm just passing my experience on to the masses. Go ahead and try them and even blindly praise them if you want. I tried them, they suck.
