Tire Conversion Rate for the Lose

K...here is the newb in me....

I'm discovering that I'm not a fan of the whole tire conversion rates. I was dead set on BFG MT KA at 33" x 12.5". That's what I'm riding on my Wrangler. Love them. Well, that configuration is possible because my Wrangler has 15" rims. Seems I am either stuck with 285/70/17 (32.7x11.2x17) or jump up to 35"x12.5"x17. 35" seem like they would be a lot of fun but it's my daily driver, not sure the added height would get me into the garage and I'm pretty positive it would rub (don't plan to chop the mounts). That being said, looks like I will need to give up a good size portion of the width (a bit over an inch) and a tad bit of the height. UNLESS, I'm missing something and perhaps another tire make actually makes a 33" x 12.5" x 17". That's the piece I don't know. I'm guessing it's all pretty standardized and there's some geometrical rational and reason for having the conversions the way they are. Guess I just want some confirmation.

Take a look at Wild Country 33X12.50X17 Mud Terrains. They are very inexpensive mud tire that will fit and not rub if you have a 3" OME Heavy or equivalent lift. The trick to the 33" tires is the rims. If you run stock rims the above mentioned will work with out rubbing under hard use. They were $ 20 per tire less then the BFG's when I was looking and on average require less weight to balance. They chew just as good. Down side of a 33X12.50 wide tire is the stock rims are a tad on the narrow side. I would not run the stock rims with 35X12.50 as the issue of the narrow rim becomes much more pronounced. Good luck. Ohhh and if you have not installed a 3” OME (Old Man Emmeu) suspension yet which is made by ARB…..get one. They are the work horse of the lifts out there. Far as conversions go type "tire conversion" into google and you will find some sites that you can punch the metric numbers into and get your standard size. Good luck and enjoy your Cruiser.

Thanks Runt, appreciate the feedback.

Yup, going to do the OME Med kit. Definitely not going to run stock rims. Going with some 17" Helos. How different is the actual appearance and ride (or is it not significant) between a 33x12.5x17 vs 285/70/17. I did the metric on the 285/70/17 which I see I essentially lose about an inch+ width. Might make the rub issue more of a non issue though. Oh the decisions....

My head is spinning...I did a search for Wild Country and I didn't find too much. There was a listing at Les Schwab: Wild Country TXR and Wild Country Traction. Nothing actually called Mud Terrain. These tires not as street friendly as the BFG MTs? I've had really good outcome with mine - wear really well on the street.

I also see some Open Country MT That look pretty damn meaty. Same manufacturer? Clearly not familiar with this brand at all.....

Lovers or haters of these??

Sorry there called Wild Country RVT .... the agressive mud design. Les Schaube is the manufacturer. Wear is similiar to BFG MT. They also come with a road hazard warrenty.

The 285 is so close to the 33 in size that it will be hard to tell the difference so I wouldn't let that turn you off so much.
