Re: Slight clearance issue

There's a long discussion here on caliper grinding for a situation very similar to yours. Look around post 50 and onwards.

1/4" and maybe even smaller spacers are made. They don't replicate the bolts (hence why the spacers can be thinner than the bolt lengths) - they just literally push the wheel mounting plane just a bit further outboard while leaving the bolts unaffected. But hence they do decrease the amount of bolt available for the lug nut. I've heard you can get these from any place including Pepboys - I was going to get some from John at Stazworks if I needed any (turns out I won't).

To grind the caliper? (void warrantee on brakes, and people claim "ah, you'll die!") or to add thin spacers? (shorten the bolts, and people claim "ah, you'll die!") My sense is you'll probably be ok either way. Obviously not as good as fitting wheels, but hey.

I've seen carboard packs w/ shrink wrap fronts hanging in PEP boys and similar that have the thin spacers. They have multiple bolt patterns to fit a variety of applications w/ the same set and I am guessing are relatively cheap ~$20. I would give this a shot first.

Re: Slight clearance issue

grind the calipers and say good bye to the warranty on them. Plus if you get into an accident and chp or DOT does an inspection on the brakes and spots that the calipers are ground down they might get a little happy to see you. I would go and get the other rims with the different off set to correct the problem.

I think shadow-warrior grinded his calipers to fit his 16's. Try PM'ing him

Here's the link to his thread

He says he had some of the caliper grinded off in paragraph 3
Thanks. I just pm'd him.

Just read through that. Looks like he took off way more then I would have to. I just need to shave a little off the forward edge.

I think getting a diffrent size rim is out. These wheels he has are no longer stock. he had bead locks installed on them. so he would be out a lot of cash to get new ones.

Little late. These are converted to beadlocks already.

Re: Slight clearance issue

tony, i have shaved calipers before and will do it again. there have been many members that have had to shave them for certain wheels as well. I believe you would be ok with grinding about 2mm off the caliper. but make sure to grind a little and check; minimal grinding is best. but you must also remember, when you put new brake pads on the caliper will stick out more than it is now.

or you can go to the autozone next to you and get those cheaper spacers for about $20. they are about 1/4" to 3/8" thick usually. that would be what you would need, if i read correctly.

I've forgotten that my pads are not as new. Very good point. If 2 mm will clear, 5mm universal spacers might just do the trick. Think they might be too thin and crack?

usually the spacers are made of a stronger material that wouldnt fatigue too badly. but i would keep an eye on them regularly.

also remember that when you add a spacer you shorten the amount of threads that go into your lug nuts. make sure you have at least 1/2"-3/4" of threads going into your lug nuts. the more threads the better!!

Re: Slight clearance issue

I think 5mm shouldn't hurt the tread too badly.
