Well, I finally chose my tire and went with the STT in 285/70r17 on my 07 2" leveled FJ. I was torn between this and the ST Maxx, and was also torn between a 285 or 295. My local tire Kingdom hooked me up with some price matching the interweb, and also with lifetime balance and rotate. He couldn't get 295s in either tire, so had I gone with those I woulda had to order blindly online, with just forum pics to go on. So he ordered the STT for me to look at, and test fit, with no obligation. I had a feeling that once he fit them, I'd be sold. And sure enough, I was. They look awesome. Even though this is a daily driver, I don't drive it "daily" as it sits at the airport when I go on trips, so I wasn't really concerned with the mileage I'd get with a "mud" tire. The STT doesn't seem as agressive as some MTs so I figured I be good.

These tires are sweet. And very quiet!!!! Im really surprised at the noise level, not bad at all. It was also raining when I got them installed, so I tossed the truck around and they gripped the road great!!! The ride is slightly stiffer, but honestly, I like it compared to the Goodyear ATs I had on there. On the drive to the airport at 80mph, they tracked and felt great, and were not loud at all. I don't always drive 80...but wanted to test 'em out. I plan on doing a 5 tire rotation with a method described here on FJC so hopefully I will get some good mileage on these as other forum members have had. I think the 295s would look good too, and who knows, maybe I'll throw a spacer on here if I want a little more beef.

Ok, enough of me.....heres some FJ porn

I have had mine in the snow a few times, felt sure and solid.

Snow? Sorry, I'll never be able to tell ya, I live in FL and zero intention of ever going near snow again! lol. As for road noise, drove em home from airport today on dry pavement. Yes, there is some noise. BUT....its really not much louder than the worn Goodyear Wranglers I had before. I have a nice system in my truck and had some Iration cranked today and couldn't hear a thing. Not that I needed to crank my music to drown out the tires....just sayin. My rear end is whiny and makes more noticeable noise than these tires. Im quite surprised.

Heres some more tire porn in dry daylight:

I sent ya a PM....

Does anybody else have anything good or bad to say about these Cooper Discoverer STT tires?? I am due for new tires and am torn between the new BFG AT KO2 and these Discover STT.....

I dont wanna tire that howls on the highway, I feel like the BFG AT is really quiet until they get worn out, than they get the wawas going on when driving on the highway.....

I'm on my 2nd set of STTs. They are the ish. You'll soon find you made the right choice as you'll have more traction than most any other rig out there. KM2s/Trail Grapplers/etc. can SUCK IT!

Also, I air my down to about 18, 15 if need be. Congrats on a great tire!

A chalk test will tell you the right PSI..otherwise getting them to last will be a matter of having a good straight alignment. It may be too late if they start to unevenly wear and then get stupid noisy!

I just did a pretty thorah (Big Lebowski shout out) chalk test today and found that 32psi up front and 31psi rears made for a pretty good wear pattern after running up and down the street 10times. Im wondering though, as far as alignment and tread wear, is it ok if the alignment was in spec? Or do I need to find someone that will align to a perfect zero on everything?

Honestly, the FJ feels just about as peppy as before. I haven't had a moment yet where I get on it and am like "crap.....this thing is sluggish now." I like em. A lot!

I forked over bout 1330 installed with lifetime rotation and balance. That's for 5 tires. The local Tire Kingdom matched treaddepot.coms price for em.

They look great! I may still add a 1 1/4 spacer at some point, we'll see.

BFG AT KO2 in 285/75/16 57.2 Lbs

Cooper AT3 in 285/75/16 57 Lbs

Cooper STT in 285/75/16 59 Lbs

Not much difference, maybe its all in the rolling resistance you are taking the fuel mileage hit. Thank You for the input, I need all of the opinions I can get! :rocker:

A co worker has the 265 size AT3 on his Duramax, and has over 25k miles on them and they still look new. I am not interested in the Duratracs as I live in the South and snow is virtually non existant here. The ST Maxx looks nice, but I am really looking for a mile road friendly tire that can still get the job done when I need to go off road. I have a rear locker, and A Trac so I can get away with a milder tire for the long haul.

On the way into my apartment complex I noticed a set of Warn bumpers on an old Chevy truck and he must have just installed a new set of Cooper AT3 tires as they still had the white letter protectant on them... :nerd

How was your experience with the Discoverer STT tires?

Noisy? How many miles did they last? Ride Quality? What was your driving conditions?

Feedback appreciated, I still like the STT tires. I read lots of reviews saying they were extremely quiet (more quiet than the BFG AT KO tires, which if that is the case I may choose the STT) If the STT would give me 40-45k miles out of a set of 5 with the spare rotated in, with a quieter ride than my BFG AT I will buy a set. :rocker:
