Paint or Powdercoat steelies for wheeling?

I ordered a set of wheelers steelies which I intend to change from black to white. Now I am wondering if I should have them painted or powdercoated.

I had my all pro bumper powdercoated and the coating has chipped off in a few places from wheeling and now has a few rust spots in those places, so I am kind of leaning towards painting the wheels so I can touch them up as needed.

What do you guys think?

Powder coating will hold up MUCH better for offroading. That is what most of the steel wheels are finished with from the factory.

Although powder coat is better for impacts, it will scrape off just like paint. I suggest paint, it is much easier to just hit it with a little more to cover abrasions. You cannot repair powder coat, you can try to sand it and paint it with a matching color; however, there is usually an thickness and finish difference and it may result in repainting the whole wheel just for one scrape.

I have tried it both ways, I will never powder coat wheels for off-roading again. I would suggest POR-15 for paint, that will hold up better than anything in most cases, that stuff rocks.

Thanks for the suggestion. After looking over their website I just ordered a few coats of POR-15's UV stable white coat and plan on doing the job next weekend. Now I just need to find a paint sprayer by then!

Regards,
Alphonse

just stick with paint. down the line you will have chips and chunks gone and it will be easy to touch it up with some masking tape and spray paint.

Yep - powder coating is much stronger than paint... but rocks are stronger than powder coating... and paint is much (!) easier to touch up.

Al,

I think you should go the paint route too. You haven't wheeled with us (to see my sliders now) for a while but, I totally regret powdercoating them white. I actually have a set of 5 steelies in my garage awaiting fundage for shoes. K

K,

I'm hoping to get out that way sometime soon! Getting the itch again, plus I'll need to try out my new set up. I just ordered 305/70/16 Mickey Thompson MTZ's yesterday and hope to have the wheels painted and tires mounted next weekend. After that I'll need to break them in

Al

Re: Paint or Powdercoat steelies for wheeling?

Try Nylon from your powder people. It doesn't scratch or flake off like powdercoat.
