My FJ is stock right now but plan to do some sort of 3" lift soon, I would like to be able to fit some aggresive tires on it before I lift if if it's even possible without tearing anything up. I realize I would likely lose some turning radius due to pre-lift rub but don't care.
I have 17" Stock Alloys, and also have a set of 16" stock Tacoma Alloys available to me for a good deal if I need them.
Here's my tire choices I'm considering.....
BFG Mud Terrain LT285/70R-17
Pro Comp Radial Mud Terrain LT285/75R-16
Pro Comp Radial Mud Terrain 33X12.50R-17
Swamper TSL/SX 32/11.50-16
Swamper Radial Trxus 33/12.50R-17
Swamper Radial IROK 33/13.50-17
Swamper Bogger 33/12.50-16
Swamper Bogger 33/10.50-16
As for my needs, I do put alot of highway miles on it but want a VERY agressive tire when I'm off-road. I had a set of Boggers on my Blazer and loved them. I'm thinking of maybe getting the 16" rims and Boggers and just swapping them on my rig when I go out wheeling. Any thoughts?
Shocker:
Have you thought about Nitto Mud Grapplers or Terra Grapplers? I have 295x70x17 TG's on mine and am really happy with them. The Mud Grapplers have a more aggressive tread, but you have to consider ride comfort, tire wear and gas mileage. I got the Terra Grapplers since I mostly am on the highway; they ride very smoothly and look nice with a 3" lift.

I'm not a fan of their tread patterns, They all seem like more street tires with a little off road capabilities. I'm looking for the opposite.
Since you're already familiar with Swampers and know the inherent strength and weakness, I'd say go with Swampers. The LTBs 34X10.5X16 will fit without body mount trims. Double check the Tacoma rims. They have a 5.5 backspace. I mounted them on the hubs it looks like any tires with decent width will make contact with UCA.
Btw, if I have mounts chopped, I'd be very interested in checking out the Boggers in 35X10.5x16.

Just my 2 cents. The IROK's are about as rock crawling aggressive of a tread that I have ever seen. But my opinion is that they ARE NOT made for alot of highway use.
But if you want looks rather than usefulness, that's the tire for you. Or pick any of the Swampers as a second choice.
The Procomps and BFG's will do so much better for the application, but you give up the super-aggressive look for one that's just tough.

I like the BFG MT's and had good luck with them on my last Yota. And they seemed to do well on trails as much as had decent life on the street. But will the 285/70-17 fit on my rig without a lift? How wide is a 285/17? I know it is about 33" high.
