Thumbs down Tire Size - Once and For All (Please?)

Greetings again all of you FJ Lovers... I've read more of this forum than I care to explain and I have yet to see a single thread that answers this question:

What is the maximum size of a tire that you can put on a stock FJ Cruiser with no lift and the stock 17 inch rims?

I am in the market for new tires and I was told by Rough Country that I should check out the Mickey Thompson Tires tires. I like the way they look, they sound solid, anyone have any experience?

Thanks well in advance!!

From what I've gathered, the size you're looking for is 285/70-17.

I could be wrong, and if so, would be interested to know.

If you're going to flex the suspension, 285 will rub. If you're not going to flex, you might be able to put 35? I imagine 35s won't rub if you don't move it.

For the most part, Ive read that 275 (GY MT/R) will fit stock and have no issues. I'm positive that not all 285s will fit without rubbing when flexed.

Re: Tire Size - Once and For All (Please?)

You've read a lot because every tire is different. Tires of the same size will all measure out different. It's that 1/8 inch here, or 1/4 inch there that makes the difference. It might say 285/70-17 but there are minor differences. Then add in factors like H/T, or A/T, or M/T with different tread patterns, some of which wrap around the sidewall, (making the tire slightly wider), and that's why there isn't a clear answer.

I'm sure there are slight differences in every FJ too, and the suspension will settle. My tires didn't rub at first, but after about three weeks, they did. If you're worried, then stick with the stock size, or just do a 275, but you'll be limited in which tires you can get in that size.

275/70/R17 is the max that will fit reliably with no rubbing under any conditions.

285/70/R17 might fit depending on the tire. But most tires of this size rub the body mount when turned full lock and little suspension flex.

Absolutely agree, and that's what I've heard over and over. I bought 275's and there's no rub.

This is absolutely true. I believe 275/70/17 is an excellent size for stock, no lift FJ's.

No rubbing, great tire.

I don't have one of the front, but here's a pic of the rear under max flex... just fits!

Lesson 1: There is no thing as "once and for all" on this forum.
