Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

Thanks guys for the photos. They really help you to see where the tire is situated relative to potential rubbing spot.

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

I recently purchased some Hankook MTs 285/70/17. I was about to install the OME HD springs/shocks, but got worried that my wife would freak out with such a big change in suspension height and handling characteristics. So, I installed a set of 1.5" front spacers, then installed the tires. The tires fit perfectly, with no rubbing anywhere. The stance is more level now. For less than $100 and about an hour of time, it was a great addition to the FJC. I found the spacers on ebay and they are excellent quality and fit. I still plan on installing the OME springs, but will wait until I get the bumper and winch in the spring.

Here is a pic with the 1.5" front spacer lift and the Hankook 285/70/17s.

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

So just to recap. 1.5 spacer in the front, and no change to the rear and the 285's will fit?

That's all I did. I cant believe toyota didnt sell them like this from the beginning.

Keep in mind that actual tire sizes can vary between manufacturers. Also, there may be differences between vehicles. I would be careful making the statement that all 285/70/17s will fit on all FJC with a 1.5" front spacer. But I feel relatively comfortable assuming that the 285/70/17 Hankook Dynapro MT will fit on an 07 FJC with a 1.5" front spacer.

Here is a pic with the drivers wheel turned so that it is at its closest point to the mount. There is at least an inch or more clearance. The tightest area is between the inner sidewall and the upper control arm, perhaps 3/4 inch there. But, Ive yet to hear even the lightest rub.

Okay dude, if you put those 285's under your FJ it'll probbly have aome rub.
But a lift in the front will fix that fast. I actually have the same problem. I recomend the pro comp leveling kit. Here's the link you need.

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

I got mine spacers (level kit) from ebaymotors. The seller was 1sourcemfg. Less than $100. Unless you lift the rear some as well, I personally wouldnt go larger than 2" front spacer. Mine is 1/5" and its level... may even be a little nose high if anything.

Is your FJ a 2wd or 4wd? I'm assuming it's a 4wd but want to make sure. Thx!

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

First thing I did, two days after buying the FJ; installed the lift spacers on the front:

Fat Bob's Garage - 2" lift spacers

These will work, until I get around to buying some adjustable coilover shocks for the front and lift springs and shocks for the rear (gotta wait til after the Christmas season).

Yeah, I want to move up to the 285's, and it's good to know they'll fit on mine (now)...
