New tires...do I need a lift?

I've noticed that a number of the forum members are running 285/70 - 17 BFGs on their FJs. Do these tires require you to put a lift on your vehicle or can you run them on a stock FJ?

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

I think they will rub as well. I've been researching the heck out of tires lately, and reading through as many posts on the Forum, and it seems the verdict is "yes".

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

I picked up a set of Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor 285/70-17s today, and here's proof that it probably requires a lift & body mount chop:

......

My suspension is still stock (for now). A 3" lift and mount chop is next on the list.

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

I haven't done my lift yet, but the tires I wanted were on sale. I put Toyo Open Country A/T- LT285/75/16 on the stock offroad package (OR) 16x7 wheels. They are close but don't rub, The tire calculator says they are taller (32.831) than 285/70/17 at 32.709". The dealer's info (Les Schwab) says they are 32.80" ( by the way the 6 ply tire is not available yet) I have the 8 ply tires. Going outside now to get a picture, back soon.

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

Don't quote me but I am thinkin you need either the OME springs or Bilsteins 5100 adjustables at the least in order to safely run the 285's....Far as I have read on here anyway

Re: New tires...do I need a lift?

Just have or do the body mount chop and you will have the needed clearance to wheel with out the rub on the mud flap. or you could just try cutting the flap area first to see if it gives you that little bit of extra clearance.
