Rapping Noise on Tire

Hi,

I have Mickey Thompson MTZ's

265/70/17 with pressures around 35psi and 8k miles

Recently I have noticed my front driver side tire is making a rapping noise whose frequency increases and decreases with my speed.

The other tires do not seem to have this noise. There are no rocks or other abnormalities with the tires. It does sound rubbery not like metal or grinding. It is like the normal tire noises but much more pronounced.

There is still a good amount of tread on all of the tires, and all of the tires have similar tread.

Is this an issue? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Re: Rapping Noise on Tire

Maybe you ran over MC Hammer.

Those are pretty aggressive tires. I would imagine if there was any little normal wear inconsistencies on the tread that it would be magnified.

Any steering wheel vibration?

Re: Rapping Noise on Tire

need to rebalance that tire. Ive done it on mine at 5k miles due to wear and chunking from the lugs. do you notice your steering wheel shaking a little too?

No the steering wheel doesnt seem to move, but I will be taking it to the shop soon anyway, and will ask them to rebalance.

Thanks.

Re: Rapping Noise on Tire

I have the same problem with my terra grapplers. Was worried there might be something off with the suspension, but no steering wheel shake or anything odd otherwise, just a noise. It's really noticeable under 20mph.

Re: Rapping Noise on Tire

Check for a split in the rubber between the lugs....the tire may be coming apart. Had this happen on a of Swamper.

Yup mine also disappears at higher speeds, I am not sure if it actually disappears or just is drowned out by the normal tire noise that gets louder as I go faster.

I will check between the lugs, thanks for the tip

Re: Rapping Noise on Tire

I have the same things on one of my Nitto TG tires. Rotating tires helps. Do it often with bigger tires. Say every oil change is a good way to do it!

Re: Rapping Noise on Tire

Bumping for an update..

Took it to a tire shop, where the guy said the noise was probably being caused by a warped/bent belt in the tire, and that it was probably dangerous.
He also said it probably wasnt a balance issue.

He could not check it out because one of his machines was broken, but if I would come back next week, he would check the tire and be happy to sell me a new set if they turned out bad.
