Hub-centric or non hub-centric?

Does it really matter?

I ran non hub-centric wheels with 35" Swampers on my Bronco for years with no problems.

I cannot find any aftermarket 16 x 8 hub-centric wheels to fit the FJ. The only hub-centric 16 x 8 wheels I find are for Chevy.

I'm wanting 305/70R16 tires but I think my OEM 16 x 7 alloy's are too narrow.

I have Moto Metals 955 wheels and they are not hub centric to the Fj and they run fine. Balanced the tires {35's} on them back in Sept. and they still ride smooth as silk....I've also had other trucks in the past that were not hub centric and never had a problem.

Re: Hub-centric or non hub-centric?

Hub centric is extremely important and more important for Toyotas. For one the Toyotas are much more sensitive to out of balance or not centered up wheels. Second when the wheel centers up on the hub it takes the stress off the wheel studs. Lastly and best of all, most wheels that are 6 on 5.5 will be hubcentric for our trucks. Our vehicle shares the same bolt pattern as chevys so that is why you see wheels specificly specified to be hub centric for GM because their center bore is way to small to fit on Toyota vehicles.

Good luck on your wheel search and make sure you clarify before you buy that they wheel is not GMHC!

I used to have a show toyota that I drove everywhere never trailered...It ran 14"wide mickey Thompson wheels on 18x39 mickey tires. It was't hub centric and i had to run a 3/4" spacer to even get it to clear the top A arm after trimming it around the edge of the stock lip....Never had a problem out of it for 112,000 miles.
Also never had a wheel bearing problem, or balljoint problem the whole time I owend/drove the truck...and I drove it to work every day Iowned it!
Guess I either got a good one or I got what toyota designed...A TOUGH ASS TRUCK! ....Either way I was never more happier in my life winning awards, and showing it off to other toyota members during a show....
I figure the Fj should be just as good as something built back in the 90's, If I could remedy it i would put a set of 18x39's on mine now. For all the naa sayers here is the truck...even made it in MiniTrukin for 2 yrs in a row for best modified mini....when they were at the shows I was on the east coast.

I would love to get the Fj back in the mix like my old P/u ....guess I'll do some more thinking come summer and GO BIGGER!

Re: Hub-centric or non hub-centric?

There are in fact wheels made that are hub-centric to Toyota. In fact there are some that will accept a hub-centric ring specially designed for Toyota. Stop by a Discount Tire or America's Tire. They have several options that are hub-centric to Toyota.

Re: Hub-centric or non hub-centric?

I just did a 16x8" Hubcentric install with 305/70R16's ... The wheels said on the site that they were not hubcentric, but when I installed I it seemed snug and center on my hubs.

Re: Hub-centric or non hub-centric?

Hub centric or not , long as you have the right BS, and offset....wheels will work and you have to make sure you have the right seat on the lugs...either conical, or flat for the wheel installed....once that has been done you should be fine...hub centric only means your ridding on the center hub instead of the lugs supporting the weight of the vehicle.
Granted hub centric is what you want more then non-hub centric but either will work.....depends on what your doing and looking for in a wheel and tire combo......

Re: Hub-centric or non hub-centric?

Thanks for all the advice. While I would prefer to have hub-centric wheels like the OEM's, it appears as though most are running aftermarket wheels that are non hub centric. Every shop in my area claims they've installed non hub centric wheels in almost every application.

The wheels I'm considering I found in this forum. They're Raceline Renegade 6 Black Raceline Wheels - Renegade 6 Black

Any advice on this choice would be greatly appreciated, as I know of nobody in my area running these wheels.

Their Tech insured me they will run true and that they have installed many on FJ's with no problems. The backspacing is the same as my OEM wheels at 4.5" and the center bore is 4.25" which will clear the FJ hub dia of 106mm (4.17").

As for offset...what is "offset"? I thought offset was the difference between the mounting surface of the wheel to the inner/outer rim. In this case, it's 4.5" from mounting surface to inner rim edge, or backspacing, leaving 3.5" distance from mounting surface to outer rim edge, resulting in a -1.0" offset. If the same wheel measured 4" inner and 4" outer, it would be 0 offset.

Have I been misled?

Re: Hub-centric or non hub-centric?

Most of our selections in the Granite Alloy line and other 17", 18", 20" and 22" wheel fitments are all hub centric fitments. All of our wheels for the FJ can be found at The Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels. Please look over our choices and I would be glad to help finalize your order and expidite your shipping.
