Roof top spare

I tried the search w/o results. Has anyone done or tried it, out of curiosity what other cons arise other than wind drag?

Re: Roof top spare

The wheel in back balances out the weight from the front, if only a little bit.

If you 4x4 then the added weight on the top is usually not good but thats pretty much for the hardcore guys.

Re: Roof top spare

It's not the weight for COG purposes or wind drag, it's just one HEAVY sucker to be tossing up or lifting up and tossing down, particularly in cold/freezing weather. OEM rims and tire aren't so bad. The Scorpion (below) is running beadlock rims and 34's, each of which weighs nearly 150 lbs.

That's one heavy spare to be lifting up and down, and it maxes that capacity of the rack all by itself without the other gear I keep up-top.

I keep a Tuffy Box on top loaded with recovery gear including an X-Jack, jumpers, tow strap, extra shackles, etc. I also mount a power tank to the OEM rack and keep 30 liters of fuel on top, and a Hi-Lift jack and shovel. What would I do with all that if I had a tire up there?

athenaceleste has hers mounted via the roof. Just putting it up there and taking it down your going to have to be a strong male. Hopefully your wife won't be driving if she gets a flat.

Re: Roof top spare

The change in COG will be felt if your running stock springs and shocks.

Re: Roof top spare

Thanks alot for your input guys, I was just looking into rear area re configure, new bumper in the works and was wondering why more people aren't using up top as an option, it all makes sense. I'm just leaving it as is and utilise the roof for other cargo needs. Thx again

Steph
