Ok so i have my lift now do i need new tires

I have the firestone mts stock size, how much ground clearance would i gain if i put 285s on? Also what size will fit with no rubbing and no chop also i have the 16 inch stock wheels and i would like to keep those. Is it worth the price?

Re: Ok so i have my lift now do i need new tires

Similar question. I plan to get the 2" OME suspension lift for my FJ. I have the stock 17" rims with P265/70R17 on them. What is the largest tire size I could put on the stock 17" rims without doing any other modifications besides the lift? Also, I see a lot of people using BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO's. Are these the best tires to get? I plan on doing some moderate off-roading, with a lot of city driving mixed in. Thanks for the help, and I love the forum.

A good off-road tire that behaves well on the street? I can think of 2 very good ones, but there are others.........BFG AT's and Nitto Terra Grapplers are the ones I am referring to though. The BFG's wear like iron and are more expensive than the Nitto's. The Nitto's are cheaper but are softer rubber, so they wear quicker. Both good though. And by going to 285/70/17.....you shouldn't have any rubbing issues if you use your stock wheels.

Um, 285/75/16s probably wouldn't rub with an A/T but M/Ts might. I have 16s with the stock offset and they rubbed before I did the body mount chop. My M/Ts give me about another inch of clearance. I have the BFG KMs.

I have that same size (285/75/16) and had to get the chop. But he was saying 70 vice 75...don't know if that could be a difference.

Re: Ok so i have my lift now do i need new tires

The 285/70/17 are pretty much the same size as the 285/75/16, so with the 2" lift would I have to get a chop for the 285/70/17? I would get the All-Terrain tires for sure, no need for the mud terrain now. Also, can the stock tire carrier and bumper handle the 285/70/17?

Also, what about the Firestone Destination A/T? They are ranked 2nd on TireRack for all-terrain tires, and the BFGs are 9.

Your stock tire: 265/75/16, approx 31.7 Dia
"Assumed" new size: 285/75/16, approx 33.0 Dia

Ground clearance = approx .65" - not much

This is based on a BFG AT size chart, but won't be too far off from one mfr to another.

For what it's worth, I've recently installed a Swayaway kit, front and rear, and am still running the stock tire. I don't really mind it. Yeah, I will eventually go bigger to probably the BFG 285/75/16 on TRD wheels, but the added ground clearance, while certainly measurable, is neglible at best.

ya a half of inch isnt really that much. Moving up in size would be more for looks to fill the empty space.
