BFG ATS OR Nitto Terra Grapplers???.....Post Pics please

ok guys I am looking to buy new tires but can not make up my mind....for me there are only two choices, the BFG ATs(black side wall) or the Nitto Terra grapplers.......which do you prefer and why??

This is my daily driver I will be putting on 287/70/17s do not want alot of noise......will be on road and definately off road, I live in FL so will mostly see dirt, sand, and the occasional mud hole.....want the best tire for all applications and cant be to noisey or screw with my gas mileage to much.

I would like members who HAVE and RUN these tires to post replies......I dont want hear say....I want facts......how do they perform?

also the guys who run these 2 sets of tires PLEASE post pics......I want to see how each looks on the FJ 285/70/17s......THANKS!!

Re: BFG ATS OR Nitto Terra Grapplers???.....Post Pics please

I've driven:
Nitto Terra Grapplers 265/70R17
BFG All Terrain 265/75R16

and now have:
Nitto Terra Grapplers 285/75R16 (all in 8 months )

Road noise: I did not see any increase in road noise for either brand over my original Dunlops.

Street: As a daily driver, my VSC kicked in more with the BFGs than my Nittos on the same daily route.

Off road: The BFGs were unstoppable. ATRACK kicked in more often with my Nittos on similar terrain. Also the BFGs felt more comfy offroad without the need to airdown as much over the Nittos.

This is not a scientific comparison. It's just personal opinion. Why did I ultimately choose Nittos for my 285?

1) Nittos cost less
2) Nittos tread looks better for wet streets IMO
3) An FJC with Nittos recently won in Baja without a single flat
4) I bought the used BFGs supposedly with 10k miles on them. My first Nittos had 10K when I replaced them and the Nittos looked LESS worn than the BFGs at 10k.
5) I never question Uphill's choice in tires!

If I went offroading more often, I would go with BFGs.

Hope that helps.

Nitto Terra Grapplers 285/75R16

I used to have BFG AT's on my old Tacoma, they were beefy but I didn't really like them on ice. They look great, but are $$$. The General Grabber has a very similar tread and is much cheaper:

I have heard good reviews about Nitto's and will likely go with these when my stockers wear out. They are priced lower than BFG's, perform well and look great. They may not be the ultimate off roading tire, but I need more all around performance.

Good luck with your choice!

I have had several sets of BFG's on my old rig. They preform great until you get to half tread then they really slip in the water and ice. I plan on going with the Grapplers when the 'lops wear out also. I like the reviews the terra gapplers have gotten and want to give them a try.

Re: BFG ATS OR Nitto Terra Grapplers???.....Post Pics please

I used to ride BFG ATs and loved them....but thought sidewall was a bit weak and they did not wear well. Put NITTO TG on my Dodge 2500 Cummins TD 4x4...and after 30k they were only about half worn...maybe less. That is a heavy truck...but I rotated every 4k and that helped I believe.

So it was natural choice for me on FJ and the size of tire was the same even...

On Road: I think they are quieter and handle better than my BFGsss...definately more confidence in them on wet roads.

Off Road: I like them better in mud and snow than BFT AT....in sand the BFG might be a tad better...but prefer the slightly more aggressive tread of the Nitto..I think it is a better all around design.

Plus the Nitto is 8 ply....and the 295 is cheaper than the 285 version.

I had BFG's on my taco, now I got Nitto TG's on my FJ. I like the Nittos better all around. But its not really comparing apples to apples. On the Taco, the rear end was so much lighter than the FJ, the BFG didnt grab as well.

BFG user hear.

I think pokerDawg gave the best break down and would agree with him. BFG has the edge in the dirt and Nitto has the edge on the street.

BFG has been the tire of choice for desert racers and has more wins in Baja then any other tire. (the rest don't even come close) had a 20 (1986-2005) year winning strike for the 1000.

Both tires are great and will get you were you need to be.

Re: BFG ATS OR Nitto Terra Grapplers???.....Post Pics please

I used to sell both of these tires when I worked at 4wp.. I've ran the bfg's and the toyo open country at's..(which is a nitto) Well made the same place..
=Nitto is made out of softer compound rubber..Wear very fast on Super duties ect. They grip the road great wet or dry..
In 11yrs I've only seen 1 blow out. 1 Belt separtation.
Very dependable tire.
=BFG At is one of very few tires that is severe weather rated.. Which is imprtant to the ski bums and mnt folk. YOU DON"T HAVE TO WEAR CHAINS even in chain restrictions on Vail pass. That sells itself.
These are a much harder compund and a 3ply sidewall. They don't grip as good in the wet. But you get your moneys worth when you get 65,000 mi out of a set.
In all that time I've see maybe 10 blowouts .. 20 belt/tread seperations.
