Wheel spacers

I've done a quick search on this and there appears to be varied opinions on wheel spacers. I'm looking at moving my factory wheels/tires out a little, and was wondering if these would cause any rubbing/warranty issues?? I can't see me lifting my FJ anytimes soon, and I'm going to run with the crap"O" tires until they need replacing, so those aren't concerns. I am also considering cheap steelies for winter use (maybe with a winter tire...not sure). I do very limited offroad, unfortunately.

Exclamation Re: Wheel spacers

Why move the wheels outward ? Spacing the wheels out will ad stress to the bearings, brakes, steering, and could limit articulation if the tire/wheel hits the inner fender well... it will stress your CV joints on severe turns, as well... Remember, Toyota spent millions of dollars designing the wheel spacing / steering and brake systems, and it'll only cost about $100 in spacers to risk screwing that up... I'm a modification nut case (its my lifestyle and my business) but I do not understand system modifications that create stress without providing any functional benefit...

I totally agree. If it doesn't add any benefit, why do it? Only bad things can happen with wheel spacers.

Re: Wheel spacers

Skip the spacers. There have been many threads devoted to problems arising from the use of wheel spacers over on the TTORA forums. You can and most likely will develop numerous issues from wheel vibration at varying speeds to difficulty with alignment when running lifts with wheel spacers. It's just a bad idea. Buy wheels with the proper backspacing.

Re: Wheel spacers

Sorry, but I have them on all 4. Needed them to run after market rims that I already had. It was the only way my rims would clear the calipers. Got them from www.spidertrax.com and have not had any problems. Every always says they are bad but have not seen any proof.

puppypappa, here are some before after pics with the stock alloys/tires with no rubbing.
pic#2 is front wheel w/spacer and rear wheel without.
pic#3 is with 1 1/4" spacers on all 4 wheels.

Re: Wheel spacers

IMHO - you can improve track on the FJ with a better offset than the stockers. We are bumping it out .5"- Any added stress is marginal.
My question is this- (We are waitign for the backordered rims) is anyone having a problem putting 33"\75 R 16's (4" backspacing) on the spare setup or are they flipping them inside out to fit?
(I Apologize for eh Hijack but it is relative- read on)...
If they don't fit are people buying a set of 2 spacers and pitching one for the spare?
Please advise

The 285's fit on the spare rack, pretty much a 33"

I wonder if people are having issues with spacers b/c of a lack of maintenance. The reccommendation to me is that initially, you want to check the torque pressures of the wheel spacer bolt every 500miles until 1500 miles.

Then after 1500 miles, it is reccommended to check them every time you do an oil change. The guys that I have talk to about wheel spacers say that when they did that, they noticed that it took retightened the bolts (on the wheel spacers) several times before they finally seated in properly. After 3-4 times of retightened, they were on their solid.

Also they said that pics of people's wheel coming off usually show the spacer attached to the back side of the wheel. Meaning it came off the hub d/t to the bolts holding the spacer on becoming loose. Again, this is possibly d/t lack of maitenance.

So if anyone is running spacers, don't forget to do the maitenance checks.
