Why 17 inch wheels?

Why does Toyota put 17's on with 16's as an option?
Better gas mileage? Better ride?
I've always wonder why so I thought I'd ask what the advantages are.

I'm not sure what's w/the 17's. I really like my 16's for off roading. Maybe the 17's do something for mileage, but they seem to be a pain to me.

The biggest issue with 16s is clearance of the ffront calipers. THis is also a problem with some 17's. If you are looking for 16s make sure they clear before you commit to them.

Marketing.. People generally like the looks of a larger wheel. I don't believe there are any real advantages to the end user. Ron

I agree, as the aftermarket sales go towards bigger wheels the standard equipment will also follow but at slower more conservative pace.
