tire damage

so, after washing all the mud off of my FJ today I noticed a gouge in the side wall of my BFG AT about 1/4" deep and about 1" long. there is white showing( I will try and get a pic up later) is this something I should be concerbned with? sould I take it to a tire shop? or am I being an overly concerned nancy boy?

Re: tire damage

I backed into a tree on the trail last week, and punched a hole right through my the sidewall of my spare (BFG AT).

It is done, I can stick my finger right through it.

I will be needing a new one.

You most likely will as well, better safe than sorry...

Re: tire damage

Any damage in the flex zone (aka sidewall) is unrepairable and unsafe. Here is where it gets really bad. If your tires have more than a 4/32nds difference in size and you go into 4 wheel drive, you can ruin your 4 wheel drive unit so you may need 4 new tires.

This can be a blessing: "Honey, I have to get some new Destination MTs'."

or it sucks: "Sh!t, I have to shell out $1400 for new tires."

I guess it is all how you choose to look at it.

Re: tire damage

I have personally seen a 2 inch tear in a sidewall repaired on the trail with at least 20 offroad tire plugs. It could have been more, we used almost all we had but it was the only way to get the truck out. This was the spare. I dont recommend this at all for the street but as a trail fix anything goes.
