Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

I am an old school guy, and have always loved the look of skinny off road tires like you would see on WW2 Willy's/Jeeps and old Defenders.

I have always wondered why I always see skinny tires on Expedition vehicles?

Here is a very interesting article by Scott Brady on the subject (thanks gon2srf for showing us this link).

Expeditions West: Tire Selection for Expedition Travel

Food for thought...

Re: Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

very nice, I learned stuff today. I still like the look of wide tires but that artcle definitly shows the advantages of the Pizza cutters. I do love the look of the LTB's though. hmmm

Re: Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

What a great article. The part about airing down cleared up a lot for me.

Thanks.

Re: Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

After doing a search, I guess I was confused with a TTORA where the debate became heated. Anyway, here's one of the earlier skinny tire threads and Alpinist links to the Expeditions West article in one of the latter pages.

Re: Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

did not read it but from all my years in military and such I always was told that skinny tall mud tires will dig down and find traction better than fat tires that tend to float near top and just spin.

maybe in sand dunes the fatter tire would be best.....but then again RAT PATROL had the skinnies on their vehicles...LOL and they were jumping dunes and shooting bad guys all the time. LOL

I also think it had to do with the period a lot of the expeditions were happening and the type of vehicles...much easier to find the tall skinny knobbies in 3rd world countries than a set of Nitto or BFGs.

Tall skinny gave you more ground clearance to allow the tires to dig deeper without resting on frame.....

I think with todays technology....the type of tire is more important than whether they are skinny or fat...just my two cents.

Re: Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

It's also very relative. What's wide to some isn't wide to others. Alot of folks consider a 12.5 wide tire to be 'wide'. I don't. I'd consider it not so much narrow as medium....a good all around width.

On lighter vehicles, the wider footprints don't seem to stick as well....but the FJC isn't light. I'd say something in the realm of 12.50s is probably the best bet, though all the way down to a 10.5 wouldn't be bad.

HTH,
Sean

Re: Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

I'm going narrow.

Just trying to decide between:

255/85/16
235/85/16
235/80/17

Probably going with the top choice...

Question Re: Wide Tires vs Skinny Tires

Great topic. I'm looking at getting a 33X10.5X16 vs. the 285 75/70ish 16. Which is more of the pizza cutter? I like pizza.
