A super choice for your application, IMHO. Great job!

Thanks to much good input on this site, I finally pulled the trigger and bought my new tires. (I managed to get 35,000 miles out of my original tires.)

My selection of the new tire was based upon:
1. I wanted the biggest tire I could put on the original 17" stock wheels without doing a lift.
2. 99% of my driving is on freeways & city roads.
3. Occassional 4 wheel drives on mild trails - especially dirt roads to get to mountain bike trails.
4. I wanted something that looked much better than the OEM tires - ideally something aggressive looking but also quiet on the road.

I chose the Good Year Wrangler Silent Armour tire, with a size of 275/70/17. The tire is larger and it barely clears in the front wells. I have driven for several days and I have no rubbing anywhere. I love the new tires - they are taller and they fill the wheel well like I wanted. I am also VERY happy with the way they drive and how quiet they are on the freeway.

The tires drive over curbs and similar obstacles with ease and are very comfortable over speed bumps at a moderate speed. Very comfortable ride.

100% happy. I bought them at Discount and got great service.
Nice choice for all the right reasons--same as mine. I have them too! Did you go white lettering inside or out? Post a pic, here's mine...

Re: Biggest Tire for 17" Wheel and No Lift

After reading a variety of threads on this topic, it became clear that 285/70R17 tires require at least a 2-3" lift to prevent rubbing, especially if you're going to go for mud/snow tires.

So, I ordered a set of OEM sized 265/70R17 Hankook Dynapro MT RT03 mud/snow tires to put on the 17" OEM steelies that I just bought for off-road/snow use. I did this because I can barely get my FJ in my garage now with the OEM sized 265/75R16 BFG AT KO's on 16" TRD rims on and, if I got the 285/70R17's I wouldn't be able to get my FJ in my garage anymore, even w/o a 2-3" lift.

Another good reason to stick w/stock sized tires -- I don't have to buy any more tire chains.

Practicality prevails.

Re: Biggest Tire for 17" Wheel and No Lift

The BFG 285/70R 17 ATs rubbed occassionally in regular driving. The Daystar leveling kit fixed all that and gave the truck a tremendous stance.

These where the tires we had on the FJ last year. Sold them, size LT275/70R17 / Wrangler SilentArmor.
BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO LT275/65R17/E 121S P/N: 26795

Re: Biggest Tire for 17" Wheel and No Lift

After reading all that.

Is there really an individual difference to different FJ's fitting 285/70/17 vs. 265/75/16 on an unlifted stock FJ?

I have the same dilemma as the original poster, but not much closer to an answer. Maybe I will have the bigger ones tried on for size, and see for myself.

I'm thinking of Cooper STT 265/75/16 vs. 285/70/17. Too bad they don't make one inbetween at 275...
