With an overall diameter of 33.3", a lift will be mandatory for sure. probably a very good heavy duty tire. Expect harshness
255/85 16 should fit fine without a lift as it's a narrow tire. Well, as long as the rim has the correct backspacing (4.5?). It's mostly the width of the tire that gets in the way...
As for the M55, it is supposedly a great tire, if a bit expensive. Very tough.
Further reading shows that this tire is considered "industrial". It may be to stiff for me to use on my daily ride. But........the Icon suspension might smooth that right out! Hmmmmm.
Still looking though....

This is the continuing dilemma. Some guys say, "lift is mandatory" with any 255-85-16, some guys say "no, it is narrow and will clear fine".
I wish guys would only speak to that about which they are sure. Would make for a lot less confusion.
After tomorrow I will be able to say definitively whether or not 255-85-16 BFG KM2's on factory 16" wheels will clear on an un-lifted FJ. Will post a report about whether or not I have to make any mods. I am hoping not. I can deal with minor rubbing when at full droop or steering wheel lock, but much more than that I will level, at least.
Well....... Hydro what is the skinny on the new rubber?????????????
Just got home from the dealer. Been an excellent evening thus far.
On my way to the Toyota dealer, I also stopped by by gun dealer and picked up a SWEET Mk12 Mod0 SPR.
Anyway, about the tires. It is too early to draw any conclusion, because I have only driven them 50 miles or so on mostly interstate.
That said, I am VERY excited about them thus far. Firstly, they look incredible. Completely changed the look of my truck. It feels so much more like a real off road rig now. The truck sits up appreciably higher, with NO lift. When sitting in the cab there is no doubt the truck is higher.
The ride on the highway is slightly altered, as you would expect. First, there is a slight hum, but it seems to fade once over about 40 MPH. There is no doubt you are riding on aggressive tires, but I almost wish I could hear them a bit more. They are not loud. At all.
In the steering, the truck still feels very tight and stable, but not quite as much as with the meek factory skins.
Truck doesnt feel unstable or tippy at all, but you can tell the CG is a bit increased. This is why I wanted to avoid lifting at all.
More to come, in my thread so I can stop hijacking this one, including pictures. But overall, if these perform as advertised off road, I think I will have accomplished exactly what I set out to. To mount a very capable tire, that is sufficiently tall (IMO) for any 4x4, without having the compromises a lift makes, at least for my intended uses. Super pleased.
Sounds good.... I too think the tall side wall is tough looking and a very functional design, great for mud and snow, .......... My Chevy crew cab duramax gets high centered on a horse turd 265/75/16
the short wheel base coupled with that tall tire makes it happen, A lift really does no good for diff and front suspension clearance anyway. I am however going to go with the 3 inch lift .... I could give two cow pies about gas mileage.

Your thinking is very similar to mine.
It doesnt matter how much lift you add, the lowest points on the vehicle are only raised by increasing tire height. A 33.5" tall tire is 33.5" tall, no matter how wide it is.
I understand that to lift these low points even higher, that a lift is necessary. My argument is that 33" or so is about the optimum tire size for a crossover type vehicle, i.e. one that is driven daily, yet expected to be effectively capable off road. And to be able to run a 33" tall tire without lifting allows one to enjoy the best of moth worlds with almost no downside.
My point is this, I am becoming more and more convinced that the 255-85-16 is the perfect tire for me.
It is an awesome tire, but very stiff side wall. I see them on duallys all the time. Should last you forever though
