Re: You Are Bullsh&ting Youself

My 285 BFGs rubbed (under normal driving conditions) until I removed the mudflap/collector.

Anyone who puts 285 70R 17's on their otherwise stock FJ is kidding themselves THEY WILL RUB!

How do I know they are on my FJ right now but tire dealer is swapping fout Saturday...no charge the 285's were his idea.

By the way BFG's AT

They look bad ass but to big!

My 285's do not rub! In all conditions...no rub. The only hint of any rub on the body mount area was accumulated mud being scraped off...but no rubber to rubber contact.

Re: You Are Bullsh&ting Youself

I had 285/70R17 BFG All Terrain TA's installed last Sat. Mine also rub very slightly on the mudflaps when turning almost full lock; as the tires wear, this would become less apparent. I plan to remove the mudflaps tomorrow until I can get the body mounts trimmed. I'm guessing due to manufacturing/assembly tolerances, some will and some won't rub. Or, it could be the variation in the mudflaps themselves as some may flex out more than others. I read in another thread here that it's possible to move the front tires forward when doing a front alignment to reduce/eliminate rubbing.

Post no. 12 talks about front alignment & rubbing:

Re: You Are Bullsh&ting Youself

For this very reason (ie, not 100% 285 owners having 100% zero issues), I was forced to go 275 just to be on the safe side. Even one person having issues was enough for me ('cause I knew w/o fail Mr. Murphy would follow me to the tire store & make me person #2).

I can say I have beaten the crap out of the stock suspension off-road with 275's w/ absolutely no rubbing (BFG ATs on 16" wheels). I would have loved to have a bigger tire, but I'm going to wait until these wear out & then pop for the lift & bigger tires.

Good luck if you're going to run the 285's on a stock suspension and actually off-road the thing to any degree...from what I've read over the months on multiple threads, it appears to be a crap shoot...some win, some lose. I only play craps in Vegas, not with my FJ.

I won't speak for others, but since I wanted to get a little better AT tire I figured why not upgrade the size for a better all around look. For me, the stock tires look a little too bicycle like...but then again I have yet to see a stock truck, SUV or car roll off the lot with appropriate sized tires. I HATE the look of a pencil tire, and to me, that's what the 265's look like on the FJ. To each his own I guess.

Re: You Are Bullsh&ting Youself

I wonder if the deal with some rubbing and some not is a production line change of some sort. For instance are the ones that rub from early or late production or all over the total production. It's possible that something could have been altered slightly that could be causing this for some and not for others. It doesn't make sense to me that there could be this much variation from day to day if the Toyota precision and standards are as rigid as everyone says.
