Looking at Nitto Terra Grapplers, Should I go with P-metric or LT?

My FJ will be my daily driver. I live in Florida where we tend to have a rainy season during the summer months. I want a good tire that is reliable in wet conditions and also has somewhat of a more aggressive look than the stock Dunlops/Bridgestone Dueler HTs. I plan on very little off-roading other than an occasional trail. With this information, should I go with the P-metric Nitto or the LT Nitto? I am looking at staying stock size at 265/70/17.

I do not have yet, but from my knowledge I can say that you will be more than fine with P rated tires

Re: Looking at Nitto Terra Grapplers, Should I go with P-metric or LT?

I'm looking for the same size and same tires P 265/70/R17.
But my main questions are:
How noisy are they?
What about traction and braking?

PS.
I'm driving 90% on road (fast) and once a month I'm going for sand dunes jumping or playing on the sand

The LT tires are a little more rugged and tough built than P rated tires.... I have LT295x70x17

Quiet on highway....great in sand, trails, snow, gravel, rocks and rain ......good in mud as they self clean better than any BFG AT i have ever run. Great braking dry and wet....just outstanding tires all the way around. I have 32,000 on mine now and still half tread

Do you compare it to MT tires or compare to some Dunlop/Bridgestone Dueler HTs(HT and normal AT)

Re: Looking at Nitto Terra Grapplers, Should I go with P-metric or LT?

The OP will want to stick with the stock size. The P tires (passenger car) are fine. I run 265/70/17 TGs on my Silverado 1500 pickup and the 285/70/17 on my FJ. The stock size P tire will be lighter and won't drop your MPG like the heavier LT tires. I just returned from a marathon drive to and from New Jersey in my Silverado and the 265s are as quiet as the stock tires were. The LT tires on my FJ are a tad noisier but still pretty quiet. Based on observation, it looks like either size is good for 50K+ miles.

Also, don't think P tires aren't "tough". My truck often hauls two tons in the bed and I pull a sawmill, log trailer, and cargo trailer all over the dang place. The D or E tires have much stronger sidewalls for playing in sharp rocks or hauling very heavy loads (think heavy duty diesel pickup trucks).

To elaborate on Brock's comment, they are very good on wet and dry pavement (i.e. better than most other AT tires and pretty much all MT tires). I've heard plenty of bad opinions regarding the BFG AT-KO but can't remember ever hearing anything bad about the Nittos.

Discount Tire Direct (a vendor on here) often has special deals on them (think four for the price of three) and gives a forum discount too.

The P265s are running $121 at Discount Tire these days.....Sweet price. P285s are $195.

i think they are just as quiet as any of the other true all terrains like the BFG AT or Toyo OC AT or Bridgestones....but they perform better in more varied terrain in my opinion. I have run Duelers, BFG AT, General Grabbers, and Dunlops...and these are my favorite by far. if I had to do it all over would have gone wth 285 size though rather than 295.....that extra half inch was not that significant performance wise but does make difference on clearance issues for UCA and body mount.

There is a member (Engineer2283) selling his 265/70/17 Nitto TG. Look in the selling area.
