Re: FJ Summit 2019 (July 17-21)

I am headed there this Sunday. Will spend the week around Durango and Ouray. Will try to get a realistic look at it. I live in the mountains of SoCal and we have had a lot of snow here, nothing like what has happened there, but most of ours stopped a month ago. I still have 4 water crossing to get to my house. Ranging from 1 inch to 5 inches of water in them. Normally dry by mid April. Expected to run until late August according to local forestry officials. Highway 243 has been closed since mid February due to water damage, and is not expected to open until September. This is the first week we have had near normal temperatures. It has been cold and rainy since November of last year. We are going to have one of the worst fire seasons we have ever had is my guess.

Global warming is happening I guess. We had major fires last year and so did the San Juans. I am just hoping under all that snow there are still roads in good enough shape and not covered by gigantic avalanches.

I am afraid the run off problems will dwarf the snow fall levels if it warms up enough to melt it.

I am now predicting it will not be dusty!!!!!

Going to be a very interesting Summit for sure. Still would not miss it for the world.

I’ll take that bet! We will see lots of dust on some roads by Summit time.

Will be interesting to see what it looks like by the Summit.
That FB Group has a lot of good info. I found this press release from May 29th posted there:

Hinsdale County, Colorado

Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway

For Immediate Release Contact: Michael Davis, Public Information Officer
May 29, 2019 Information Line: 970-648-4118

Hinsdale County is working with San Juan County to coordinate this year's Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway opening. A meeting was held last Wednesday night, with input from both Road & Bridge supervisors, the Sheriff's Offices, Emergency Managers, and administrators. Representatives from the Bureau of Land Management were also present. After discovering a 100-foot deep avalanche between Eureka and Animas Forks, San Juan County road crew is working on an alternate route and expects to be in Animas Forks by the end of June. With that information, Hinsdale County opted to re-direct the Road & Bridge crew to assist with pre-flood priorities and address lower elevation road issues. San Juan and Hinsdale Counties staff will continue to keep each other updated primarily through the Road and Bridge Departments and the Sheriff’s Offices. The Commissioners of both counties have scheduled their next work session to review the current conditions, future plans and coordination between the two counties will be June 20th.

Re: FJ Summit 2019 (July 17-21)

Anyone want a room at Twin Peaks? I'm cancelling ours and staying somewhere else in town. I'm going call them now, and in past experiences with them, I'll have to leave a voice mail and they will call me back.

Good luck!
