Smile 4X4 with "Crawl" - Grinding noises.....

New owner here:

I'm trying to learn my FJ. I have read the manual over & over. It reads as very simple to use the "CRAWL" system.

I put the vehicle (Automatic transmission) in 4D/L4 everything is fine. Then I push the "crawl Button" to on. When I released the brake, I get this horrific noise that sounds like grinding gears. So I stopped within a foot or so, and turned CRAWL off.

I also tried 3D/4L & 2L/4L with the same serious grinding results. The manual indicated to expect sounds from the front compartment, but I don't think this is what they are talking about ...... ANY IDEAS WHAT I'm DOING WRONG.

Hmmm.... that almost sounds like what I remember A-Trac sounding like. But wait for someone that knows more about it to respond.

Don't think you're doing anything wrong. Try adjusting the speed with the rotary knob. When you get the right setting it should stop grinding. I think it's just getting the speed right for the available traction.

I don't have crawl.... so my question is does the driver have any throttle input or does the crawl control all throttle input?

Suck it up... it's only -40

Re: 4X4 with "Crawl" - Grinding noises.....

Your FJ will make all kinds of noises when in CRAWL mode. The computer is modulating both the brake and glass to maintain an exact speed (controlled by the dial). You'll notice when you're going uphill or downhill there will be much less noise since gravity is causing it to work only one or the other....relax. It's all good.

From the 2 times I played with it, CRAWL controls throttle and brakes. And I believe if you foot brake it will turn CRAWL off. I don't know what the system would do if you added additional throttle.

Smile Re: 4X4 with "Crawl" - Grinding noises.....

I was trying Crawl on my 150' cement (level) driveway. I know that may not be the best place to test it. BUT, I expected that when set into motion, the system would just crawl along like it should do while in 4x4 with controlled crawling speed, then when needed, the engine would kick in and make the climb or descent.

I just can't believe that those horrific grinding noises are normal. The noises are really overwhelming.

Thanks for the responses.

On those two occasions you played with the CRAWL System, did your vehicle make that horrific grinding noise when you hit the crawl button and released teh brake.....???
