Re: GVM upgrades.

If you want to keep your weight to a minimum then you need to choose your kit and mods with care and consideration for the weight of each item and it's position in/on the vehicle. (For example the ARB front bumper is insanely heavy IMO). There is not an option for increasing the GVM as you call it. You can help with the way the FJ handles extra weight with stiffer springs or air bags in the rear springs but this doesn't alter the total weight you can carry.

If you need to carry a lot of gear the you might need to be looking at a pick up with a greater weight capacity not an FJ

You have to carefully consider what you bolt on, and what the vehicle is to be used for.
Do you need a bull bar? For what? Protection against animals? Mounting a winch? Cool factor? There are options - Aluminium bull bars or steel "hidden" winch mounts like from US Offroad.
Skid plates - For sand you only need an uprated engine skid, and 8mm Aluminium is fine. For rocks, steel is better but you don't have to go crazy covering stuff up with 25mm plate. Same goes for sliders. You don't need fuel tank skids - I've never heard of one of those plastic tanks rupturing ever. It just doesn't happen.
Roof racks - What are you putting on there? Would a trailer be better?
