Cheap Ham or good deal?

http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-UV5RA-136-174-Dual-Band-Transceiver/dp/B009MAKWC0?t=slicinc-20&tag=slicinc-20&ascsubtag=7qu7cC-JEeOdevptPfwOsA0_wirj3_GLP_0_0

It's $30 on Amazon. Seem ridiculous but the reviews are favorable. Has anyone played with this?

Re: Cheap Ham or good deal?

I bought one of these guys about 6 months ago, an OK radio for the cheap price.

Almost impossible to program from the front panel. I never could figure out how to do it.

The programming SW is a little quirky and hard to install but it does work. I used Boefeng's SW not CHIRP referenced in most of the eHam reviews.

The review link on eHam that FJ4RWS posted is a good resource.

I pretty quickly replaced it with a Yaesu VX-8G/R although for a lot more money.

Re: Cheap Ham or good deal?

Thanks Roger and Robert. The overall tone of the reviews seem to be favorable especially considering the price. Should make a good beginner radio.

Re: Cheap Ham or good deal?

I have 5 and they work great.

Good news is that $30 will fix any hardware problem or loss. I haven't had any.

Go here for operating info, manufacturer's information is terrible:

Re: Cheap Ham or good deal?

I have one too AND I figured out how to program it just using the buttons on the front. Works great! I used it extensively at the Summit with an external mag mount antenna and was able to communicate with others all over the mountain.
