Newbie needs to buy an FJ ASAP!

Newbie here who's wife vehicle was just stated a total loss. She wants an FJ! I was shocked when I saw the prices that they are getting for them. I have ready Jimmy Buffet's post on buying a new FJ, very informative, and I feel like I am in the plus $10k crowd already .

This will be a daily driver for my wife, so realistically, it will see little off road use but some light trail as we go fishing some times and go on some day hikes.

I am looking at 2010 - 2014 years only, and it must have blue tooth, back up camera, and power windows etc. All other options, at least of what I am aware of, could go either way. I am trying to stay at $30k or under, but would love to be under $26k but I realize that would be a higher mileage vehicle than under 60,000 miles.

Looking in to the future, and assuming after 4 years we will add another 60,000 miles, is it worth paying for a 2014 to have the last year made?

I am finding 2012's with under 60,000 miles for for about $3-$4,000 less than a similar 2014, will it be worth paying the difference or just go with the cheapest price for the mileage regardless of year? I also found a couple of trail team vehicles and but the colors have not been what she wants the most, but I really like the look of the trail team versions.

I have a couple of options in town that are one owner 2013 and 2014 with under 44,000 miles for $28-$29k which seem like good prices, they are stock. There are a couple of others worth mentioning, a grey 2014 with the blacked out toyota wheels (look like trail team but not sure the vehicle is a TT), plus a custom front bumper, 57,000 miles for $29,000, and a 2011 TT Green with 67,000 miles for $27,500.

Do you think long term value with be that much higher for a TT or 2014 to justify spending more $$ for one of those? Any product knowledge would be appreciated regarding value of the special models or 2014's. I am under the gun on time so I will need to buy whats out there now vs being able to watch the market for 6 months. Thanks!

Re: Newbie needs to buy an FJ ASAP!

After getting some calls back from some dealers, i guess this comes down to:

2010 / 2011 with 65k - 95k miles for $21000 - $23,000

OR

2013 / 2014 with under 50k miles for $28,000 - $31,000

She will put about 15,000 miles on per year, so i am buying about 2-3 years of use for about $8k.

I say go with the lowest mileage one you can find in a color you like. You will love it and it will last you a long time.
I just hit 90k on mine and am still not interested in anything else. Mine will last me another 10 years if I don’t buy the wife something else, take her FJ and make mine a dedicated camping/trail rig.

I think the bluetooth was added in 2011 or 2012. It is a pretty cheap fix if it does not have it at any car audio store.

Re: Newbie needs to buy an FJ ASAP!

Good decision in looking at 2010+ only.

First decide TT, TTUE or plain...

Then narrow down by a few colors...

Think about mods (lifts, bumpers, lights)...

Inspect the actual vehicle ... wear and tear, scratches, dings, fading, etc.

I personally don't think it is worth paying a LOT more for a low mileage vehicle. These things age well and run forever, there is often no difference between a 60k mile and 90k mile FJ.

Either way you cannot go wrong, so go ahead buy whatever YOU like

Re: Newbie needs to buy an FJ ASAP!

Thanks guys. I have an offer out on 2014 right now, but the dealer is balking and hasn't countered yet, so they may be talking with another party on the vehicle. I am not married to a color other than the ones that are "off the list of possibilities" that she has mentioned. I will make a few other offers and see where it goes. I would really like to find a 2014 with under 60k miles for under $28k but we will see.

Don't get too hung up on the bluetooth. It is the worst system I have ever used. Every other modern vehicle I have owned has a better system. Even my aftermarket kenwood receiver is much better than the FJ.

Good to know, that is disappointing to hear as my last two vehicles the blue tooth has worked great.

I think I can get a deal done at $28k with 57,000 miles, 2014 FJ with what it looks like, all options. The downside is that the wheels are factory wheels and were painted at some point, so I assume that will wear over time, but maybe no more than visual wear and tear on stock wheels. there are also some small scratches on the vet, but need to keep in mind this is a 2014 and not new. I have another 2014 with 39,000 miles for $31,000. Thanks for everyone's input thus far.
