Oil Dipstick O Ring Help

After taking delivery of a used 2012 FJ, I tried checking the oil and found the dipstick impossibly hard to pull out. I noticed it is due to the O-ring located below the finger loop. As I pulled it out, the o-ring shattered and now need a replacement. The dipstick naturally does not fit as tight but I am now not sure if oil will come shooting out without the o-ring installed. Do I really need to replace it or is there another solution that will make checking the oil level easier while maintaining a good seal? Thanks for any advice.

Oil Dipstick O Ring Help

I would take the broken O ring to the autoparts store and find a match to replace it. I don't think oil is going to spew out unless the dipstick is coming out real far while driving. I would be more worried about dirt and water.

Yeah that is all it is for really. Should be able to find a suitable one in those assortment packages at the store like Small mentioned.

Pretty sad it got that brittle. They must have NEVER checked the oil. When you check the oil some is bound to get on the inside of the tube and lube the O-ring a little.

Agreed, that is not a good sign of proper maintenance! My 07 is still good to go after a thrashing but regular fluid changes and checks.

In your case since it's a 2011, it had free oil changes for awhile. The owner probably just drove it, then took it to the dealer for an oil change without ever checking it themselves. Fortunately the FJ doesn't (or shouldn't) burn much if any oil so as long as it was changed as recommended I wouldn't worry about it..
